I think it won't have s2, that was really the ending, an open one. Not even open, but HANGING. C-dramas are very notorious with this kind of ending so it's really not surprising. I would be surprise if they'd announce another season. But who knows right? They might do s2 in the coming years like the pace of My Eternal Love, 2017/2018/2021 s1-s3 respectively.

I am not sure why you feel bored or you felt its slow burned but since episode 1 it has been well-paced and each episode has its own focused, either a character, back story or just the plot in general. I honestly didn't skip anything and you have to be vigilant with small and minuscule details that served as clues to the coming episodes, lines you need to take heed of.

I also don't know why many viewed the ML as weak. In the first episodes he was indeed weaker in character compared to his brothers because firstly, he was not interested with the Sword Wielder throne. Even in the first episodes he displayed great empathy for his people specially when he let that wounded guy drink the elixir which is supposedly only for him. It was followed up with another scene at the Back Hill, when the young Masters geared him as someone different from the previous trial takers because he cared for his people. If I may say, his character developed so much compared to the rest of the characters.

Even Sang Jue, his character felt as if he was eyeing for the throne but he was not. This was evident with the secret letter he wrote for Zi Yu as he was taking his 3rd trial. He wants his brother to come out of his comfort zone because he knew only Zi Yu was rightfully heir for the throne.

Then again, if this is slow for you, this type of genre is not your cup of tea.
