I had a friend who had it and was too ashamed to seek help for it because she thought it meant that she was a terrible mother. Thank goodness her mom noticed the change and dragged her to the doctor... she told me later that she seriously thought about killing herself. The only thing that kept her from going thru with it was the fact that her husband was TDY. (temporary duty) for school and since she didn't know how long it would be before someone found her she was afraid the baby would go hungry and maybe die with her. Her mom flew in to make a surprise visit took one look at the state of her house and the way she was dressed and knew something was wrong. The doctor gave her some anti-depressants and had her to a support group with other women going thru the same thing.
