where did you even watch this? I tried iqiyi but the subbing is a mess. also here because of SFOT.
Yeah I watched on iQiyi. The subs there are machine-translated, but my brain is good at parsing those and I've got some basic knowledge of mandarin. Plus the storyline is not very complex, and most scenes are fairly straightforward. Idk if it's worth the trouble to use your braincells on this one if you came here from SFOT. Unless you really want to hate-watch it like I did lol. Chen Yan is the anti-Zhang Wan Sen, the production values aren't great, and the story here is /very/ soap opera.
watched the first 5 eps and the storytelling is bit...disjointed. the second FL looks way older than hs age
Yeah, as much as I love this drama, I think the first 5 eps are by far the weakest story-wise. I take particular issue with the classroom-swap (with the broken glass) plotline. But I think everything afterwards is fairly smooth sailing. I am very biased though lol
So despite all the time traveling... her actual present never changes because they were all parallel universes?
Yup, all 'timelines' were separate instances. Though I suppose it's not quite correct to say her present never changes, because she herself changes /a lot/ by the end :'')
This. I think we are so used seeing Chinese idol dramas where the acting are mediocre (some bordering horrible),…
Yes, my thoughts exactly! This felt like a drama made by people who actually cared. So many idol dramas feel like quick throw-aways, perfunctory in most aspects. A drama like this is such a breath of fresh air.
i can't understand anything. i felt it's easier than that.
Yeah, that was my thinking too. All the behind-the-scenes clips they've released have been super short and few in number, they just kind of dumped all the episodes right before the holidays, iQiyi didn't really push it. Given Qu Chu Xiao's uh...various issues, I'm assuming they were worried about how audiences would receive the drama, let alone any extra stuff. They probably figured it'd be best to stay quiet, let the drama speak for itself, and hope for the best. Which I guess was smart in a way. But the success clearly caught them off guard lol. Really glad it worked out too, this drama is a gem.
i can't understand anything. i felt it's easier than that.
Aah, gotcha ahaha. Yeah, I imagine they'll at least be able to break even. There's just some uncertainty because the funding method they used is very successful for low budget dramas. Those shows have much less of a hole to climb out of though, this drama has a hole like 3x as deep at least. You're right though, this drama did exceed expectations (the production crew def did not seem prepared lool) and the word of mouth is still pretty strong. Just gotta wait and see~ It's really just a matter of when they get their payout from iQiyi
i can't understand anything. i felt it's easier than that.
Sorry, I'm too used to poor translations I didn't notice how confusing the wording was lol. I cleaned it up a bit so hopefully it reads better. Basically, the producer says they will officially announce their plans for any extra episodes or a second season after they make back the money they spent making this drama (65 mil yuan). They get paid by iQiyi based on views, ads, subscription fees. He's implying there will be a follow-up of some kind, we just have to wait.
Whatcha confused about? Perhaps my brain is too used to scuffed translations lol. He's just saying that they're waiting for their payment(s) from iQiyi. The budget from this drama was not small, so there's a lot that needs to be recouped before they can announce any plans of extra episodes or a second season. He seems to be implying we'll be getting some kind of follow-up at least.
Wang Feng, the producer of this drama and CEO of it's production company (Cool Whale), just had an interview. Here is is - http://ex.chinadaily.com.cn/exchange/partners/82/rss/channel/cn/columns/sz8srm/stories/WS62061966a3107be497a06006.html I tossed the question we probably care about the most into google translate (and cleaned it up a little).. Q:有很多用户都在催番外和第二季, 目前有这方面的计划吗? Q:There are many users who are urging for extras and a second season. Are there any plans for this at present? 王风: 这个要等成本回收后再告知, 一切等官宣吧, 定不负大家期待! Wang Feng: This will be announced after the production costs are recouped. Wait for the official announcement, it will definitely live up to everyone's expectations!
Not really the most concrete answer, but it's something I guess. For context, the production costs for this drama were not low at all. People keep saying it's the highest budget account-sharing drama by a large margin. The number I keep seeing is 65 million yuan (~10 million USD), sooo fingers crossed lol
I don't see how people call this a happy ending. It was a bittersweet ending. The FL had character growth and…
Yeah, the scriptwriters really brought out the knives in the later parts of this drama lol. Real emotional terrorism occured. The ending itself, bittersweet for sure. But I did find it kinda happy in way - she went through so much but became a better person for it. She finally found direction in her directionless world and she'll be the one to remember him this time. Maybe hopeful is a better word? Optimistic? Idk. Either dead or alive works for me, though my bleeding heart wants to skew more towards alive just so that Zhang Wan Sen can have a break from the misery. The theories people come up with are fun to read. These crafty scriptwriters knew what they were doing when they came up with this ending haha... a great engagement driver for sure.
already excited for any new dramas from our main leads! tho I kinda wanna see Qu Chu Xiao in a more light drama…
Ooh, using the comment barrage is smart! Yeah, his buzzcut takes a minute to get used to.. the pics on his douban profile definitely made me go "???????" when I first saw them lol. Really witnessed the duality of man over there. It's not a bad look though.
