ida this drama is a big deal for her because it's the first time she got first billing in a big budget costume drama (she was second billing in LLTG). billing is serious business for chinese actors because they see it as a test for how well they can carry a drama. even if this drama has its negatives, the performance so far has been good and it will be a boost for ZLS career.

tbh I think fans are too sensitive. there's only 141 reviews so far lol the sample size is too small right now. the first 4 episodes are just ok so far. 7.4 makes sense to me for now. the ratings will rise later on.

coming from SOKP, you can immediately see the vast difference in budget lol this drama just screams money. you can see through the scale of the set pieces and costuming and cinematography. I'm kind of wary of the script writer because I think she's a bit of a hack and tends to write her dramas into a corner (A Dream of Splendor's last 20 episodes still haunt me) but I'll stick around for the visuals for now.
although I will say the filter in this drama is a bit strong. I think maybe the director did it to cover the age of the actors but sometimes the blurring effect makes this look.. like a dream sequence if that makes sense

I've only watched one drama where she wasn't dubbed and it was a modern drama. even there, she wasn't good. historical dramas are even harder because the line reading require a certain rhythm (think shakespeare for example). truth be told, it doesn't matter what age she is, she just doesn't have the skills.

I wouldn't be surprised if she reads douban lol because I think that is where he has been getting torn apart the most. But it also feels like they keep using gifs or screenshots of the scenes where his character is ill like the palace scene in episode 1 or the cave scene.
Tbh, I think the issue is that his acting is very raw and he still needs a good director to guide him. Unfortunately, Zhu Ruibin kept telling him to over-act and that has been one of the things people have had the most issues with. He also needs to work on his expressions in non-dialogue scenes because he has a tendency to look .. "frowny". hard to explain.
There are scenes where he is good but unfortunately, like I said, he has a lot of critics who are blowing up the scenes where he's overacting in.

I mean, at the end of the day, the type of projects he's attached to are usually just male lead with 2nd billing. his roles are not really desired by large liuliangs so I'm so confused by all the hate he gets from fan circles.
yeah I have nothing against WXY but I could not understand the hype about his line reading. I understand mandarin, and his line reading was very.. robotic. I was actually surprised he wasn't better at it since he graduated from the most prestigious acting college in china. ZLH is a bit consistent, sometimes his dialogue sounds flat like he's reading a book, but when he's good, he's like surprisingly good lol I think most of the memorable dialogues in the drama came from him.
