Ep. 35 1:50 10 years ago the real Liu Taizhen accidentally fell off a cliff. She died then but the Snake Lord borrowed her body and came back as her. The flash back in ep. 24 27:32 where we see her being rejected. I expect that it would have been too confusing to use another actress for the brief two minutes in her other life. I guess we can also say that she will grow up to look like the Snake Lord no matter which body she borrows.

Actually that scene in ep. 34 was setting up a similar scene in ep 36. In 34, he is not willing to say that he is with Ms Liu in public, in front of his close friend Huang. I saw the un-subbed version. Mei Si didn't appear to die. He was standing at the bottom of some steps in Demon Town and Snake Lord looked down at him and she smiled.

I would blame the scriptwriter Zhao Lin who penned both but with different directors.

The elder sister died. What could be learned is that to keep an obsession in the end only endangered the Princess' life and ended Marquis Chang Jin's life.
Apparently there was a divide between the director (who wanted a sad ending) and the screen writer (who wanted a HE) If Butterflied Lover is a take on Butterfly Lover, it should have been a SE. And we know that SE like that go over like a lead balloon. Had we seen from early on that the love was doomed, then it might be easier to swallow.

Rain Lu is different in Butterflied Lover. (Gentle loving wife, a bit childish. Part of a very sweet love story,) And different again in the modern day Perfect Mismatch. (straightforward heroine. initially unintentionally the comedic bane to the uptight CEO ML) The former is a mini-drama. I think that maybe you may not do mini-dramas..
