It’s left ambiguous for audience interpretation but I agree the moment he shifted his hands to hold hers, there was a change. I think it started when he went to look for her that night at the gym which was the first time he seek out her presence & was the same night he walked her home, something he never did. It’s like he yearns for her but he knows he not suppose to because of obvious reasons. I feel like he jokes & teases HD as an excuse to get close.
