Every time I watch a new episode with a one hour runtime, I end up watching for almost two hours instead because I keep rewinding the cute and funny scenes, which are A LOT
Once again, the award of bestest pal and friend and bro goes to Baek In Hyuk, now including Taesung as a new friend for him to take care of. He must curse Im Sol so much in his mind πππ
As a way to cope with the waiting of the newer episodes, I tried starting another romcom teen kdrama, but I struggled with the first episode already bcus I kept comparing it to the fluttering feelings I get while watching Lovely Runner, and it's just incomparable tbh. I ended up dropping the other drama.... What has this done to me tbh
It's true, KHY IS STANDARD, SHE IS CHARACTER HERSELF
As someone that has been following her works since Sky Castle, I am srsly so so so proud of her π₯Ήπ₯Ή She deservers all the bestest roles and recognition she is getting.
Btw, is it true that the writer and directors of Lovely Runner wrote the drama based on having Kim Hyeyoon taking the role, and if she had refused to take on the role, they wouldn't have proceeded with the drama production?
tbh Iβm ok with the side characters being this way if weβre only getting an hour runtime bc every minute feels…
I think people starts seeing side characters as uninteresting exactly because the writers don't give them enough character depth. They don't need much screentime nor do they have to take the main couple's spotlight, but like you said, I miss seeing side characters getting more fleshed out, instead of just appearing randomly and not having much to add to the story. I have seen many kdramas where the side characters could shine and be interesting while having little screentime, which is what I miss seeing in Lovely Runner. But SolJae really kinda makes up for it all hahah
I think my only complaint with Lovely Runner is that aside from the main couple, other characters don't really add much to the story at all aside from adding more extra scenes with or for the main characters. Even Taesung and Baek In Hyuk, which are also supposed to have main rokes, hasn't had much character development. And I am sorry for the fans, but Im Geum and Hyunjoo's love line seems so over the top and is used so much as a comic relief that I can't take them srsly π
Somehow, this drama reminds me a bit of how I felt while watching Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, where the main couple's perfect chemistry saved and carried the whole drama on their backs with their flawless romance hahah
I know we are all rooting for Sol and Sunjae and I love them to bits, but episode 10 just made me feel how I really like Baek In Hyuk as a friend for Sunjae. I mean, as viewers we root for SolJae like crazy, but in Baek In Hyuk aka Sunjae's best friend POV, Sol can really seem like a red flag for his friend, and he tries his hardest to make Sunjae move on from her hahahah I think he is such a dear friend.
I haven't watched episode 10 yet, but if Sunjae really doesn't end up in Eclipse and doesn't become an idol, I think that would be the best outcome for his romance with Sol. I mean, I LOVE Idol! Sunjae, he looks so freaking hot and his voice is angelic af, but let's be honest here, realistically speaking Sunjae and Sol would never have a peaceful love life with all his fans and many reporters following them around 24/7.
I can understand why some people are frustrated over Sol choosing to ignore Sunjae and trying to distance herself…
Super random but this episode reminded me of an otome game I played, where the female MC can also rewind time, and she rewinds it many times in order to make everyone happy, both herself and her loved ones. She starts hopeful and bright, but her choices don't always lead to happy endings for everyone, sometimes it even makes some people die, and slowly, she starts losing her confidence and bright personality, and becomes more and more afraid of her choices, to the point that it led to her making a drastic decision of just being recluded and avoiding everyone instead. She suffered and her choices seemingly made others suffer too, so she blamed herself and isolated herself in order to not make others suffer anymore.
But her love interests instead saw right through her and they proactively "broke" the "shell" she created around herself, and made her realize that she doesn't have to shoulder everything by herself π₯° I think we will see something like this happen between Sunjae and Sol too, maybe other characters will come to help too, they have to make Sol realize that she doesn't have to be alone nor does she have to blame herself for everything that has been happening.
I can understand why some people are frustrated over Sol choosing to ignore Sunjae and trying to distance herself away from him, this can easily be branded as the typical miscommunication trope in kdramas for some people.
But overall, I stopped to think about it for a moment and tbh, if I was in Sol's position maybe I would have chose to do the same. She didn't just see him get physically injured again, she has been living with the guilt of making him suffer emotionally since during the first/original timeline too. Imo, I think there's a big chance that 1st Timeline Sunjae got depression and became more recluded after "failing" to save 1st Timeline Sol and hearing her scream at him in rage for leaving her disabled. Yes, of course it wasn't his fault but considering his personality he definitely thought he should have done better and more to save her before the accident even happened, and he was probably blaming himself for all these years, to the point it led him to become estranged from others. And then 2nd Timeline Sol saw the past and she knows she has hurt him deeply by blaming him for not "saving" her "properly" during the accident.
And not only that, she has repeatedly "failed" to save him many times now. When he still hurt his shoulder anyway and became unable to compete anymore, and when it seems Sunjae finally can be happy with her, that psycho came and causes an injury on him, and she wasn't there with him to protect him. Just like how Sunjae blames himself for a lot of things, Sol also blames herself for any unfortunate stuff that happens to Sunjae, not because she made those things happen, but because she blames herself for being powerless and unable to do anything to help and save him, as if her choices never leads to a good ending. The choice she made in Ep 9 of ignoring and avoiding him isn't done logically, but it came from her shock and emotional turmoil, because she became desperate and afraid and now does not know for certain if her choices can actually make him happy or make him miserable instead, so she chooses to avoid him instead, because now she is afraid of hurting him even more.
Overall, our main characters having been suffering too much and it pains me to see them like this :(
Can someone answer something for me, regarding Sun Jae and Baek In Hyuk's friendship? During the first timeline, why did these two have such a estranged relationship, to the point that it led to them not even looking at each other and fighting?
Hmmm I think I am the minority that didnt quite enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Dont get me wrong, the production was quite good, the cinematography was quite captivating and Lee Taevin REALLY deserves all the awards for his acting, guy literally carried the whole show on his back. And I like that they tried something different from the usual with the plot. I was expecting some fluffy heartfluttering slow burn romance but got a whole philosophical and psychological subplot instead HAHAH
But I guess my biggest gripe with this is that, while I totally liked the message they wanted to convey (self-love, self-respect, finding meaning in your life, having someone to love and love you back, etc), i think the plot felt a bit too convoluted and rushed at the end, and this is coming from a KBL that actually got a BIGGER runtime from the usual. The pacing definitely could have used some improvements, because it felt like they wanted to add a bunch of things into a tiny timeframe.
Also, the side characters just kinda... existed?? They didn't really add much to the plot at all. I mean, Kyunghoon literally made zero impact on the plot, we didnt even get to see him bonding much with the main characters which I thought was his main purpose?? To be their friend, see Yeowoon and Myungha have someone else in their life that was there for them. And don't even get me started with Sangwon, poor boy had so much potential but they didn't even dwelve more into his story. He didnt even serve much as a love rival, simply got shoved into the sidelines to almost never be mentioned or acknowledged ever again π I mean, the side characters aren't supposed to steal the spotlight, but it felt like they didn't even serve much purpose at all...
All in all, I still think this could have had an even bigger potential! The main reason I liked this as much is mostly 99% because of Lee Taevin's superb acting.
