Oooh nice! Since I also watch dramas that are around 60 episodes/60 hours, Asadoras aren't really that long at…
You're right, it really is all about perspective! I think a lot of people see 156 and panic without realizing that the episodes are as short as they are!
I'm mad that it's not in the running for best drama. I nominated it. What the heck?
I nominated it for best drama too! But I'm not really surprised that it didn't make the final poll since asadoras unfortunately aren't really popular among casual jdrama watchers. Nevertheless, the fact that it even made this many categories is great! Hopefully more people will want to watch it now!
Hiyokko actually made a few categories! YES! Fingers crossed it can win something! Also happy to see a nice variety of nominations... hopefully lots of different dramas get to win awards this year
If you could, I hope Hiyokko fans were watching the NHK's 68th annual Kouhaku Uta Gassen today! There was a new 10 minute Hiyokko special and it was just wonderful! I won't spoil anything, but there were so many cute moments and Kuwata Keisuke (the singer of the theme song) made a guest appearance. I really missed this cast so it was amazing to see everyone together again!
When I sat down to do this I realized that I hardly watched any dramas or movies in 2017... but there are never enough nominations for Japan so I’ll do my best to add a little bit of variation! Best Screenwriter (and for which show?) Okada Yoshikazu (Hiyokko) Best Japanese Drama of 2017: Hiyokko Best Japanese Movie of 2017: One Week Friends Best Romance Drama: Totsuzen Desu Ga Ashita Kekkon Shimasu Best Comedy Drama: -- Best Romantic/Comedy Drama: Ani ni Aisaresugite Komattemasu (Drama version) Best Historical Drama: Hiyokko Best Family Drama: Kahogo no Kahoko Best Action/Thriller/Suspense Drama: -- Best Mystery Drama: Reverse Best First Episode of a Japanese Drama of 2017: -- Best Manga/Anime Adaptation: -- Best Medical Drama: A Life Best Japanese Actor(and for which role?): Kimura Takuya (A Life) Best Japanese Actress(and for which role?): Arimura Kasumi (Hiyokko) Best Japanese Supporting Actor(and for which role?): Yamazaki Ikusaburo (Totsuzen Desu Ga Ashita Kekkon Shimasu) Best Japanese Supporting Actress(and for which role?): Shishido Kavka (Hiyokko) Best Up and Coming Actor of 2017(and for which role?): Takeuchi Ryoma (Kahogo no Kahoko) Best Up and Coming Actress of 2017(and for which role?): Iitoyo Marie (Today’s Kira-kun) Best Villain: -- Best Idol Actor(or Actress): Idk if he counts as an “idol” (he is a rock singer) but Yamamura Ryuta (Totszuzen Desu Ga Ashita Kekkon Shimasu) Best Couple: -- Best Bromance: -- Best OST: “Wakai Hiroba” by Kuwata Keisuke (from Hiyokko)
I realize it wasn’t your intention to put down NigeHaji in this article, but the comparison kinda comes off that way. NigeHaji was a phenomena in Japan, cracking 20% in the ratings and even being the top worldwide trend on Twitter during its last few episodes. It has won well over 20 major awards and yesterday alone it won 5 awards at the Tokyo Drama Festival. It’s a quirky and special drama that really had a nationwide impact in Japan and internationally it got a lot of people interested in jdrama again (not an easy feat!). Both these dramas are awesome and worth the watch, but trying to make Because This is My First Life out as a “better” less “painfully awkward” and more “real” NigeHaji doesn’t seem like the best way to promote either since they’re not based on the same source material and aren’t supposed to “versions” of each other. Everyone should definitely watch both!
I'll be the first to say I had serious doubts about how much I would love this asadora. It just didn't seem to have the same magic. But I promise you, it gets there. Now that there are only 2 weeks left, I don't ever want it to end.
Also happy to see a nice variety of nominations... hopefully lots of different dramas get to win awards this year
