This is a spotty series but some of the spots are insanely bright ones!
This truth-telling reveals that the fictional accounts of these events in kdrama are eclipsed by the absolute savagery of the real thing. Imagine what it feels like to live in this small country and still write literature and scripts, to act and direct film and tv....
Knowing most of what went on, writing for an audience only partially willfully ignorant of these events. It is so utterly painful. So scary.
Now we know where that emotional depth in kdrama comes from. And why cinema is so needed to heal from these events and to confront them. So many times I have cried at shows because they awaken exactly those feelings of sorrow and helplessness with regards to all sorts of tragedies, altho few so extreme, in my own cultural sphere.
The story of the clean streets campaign was in fact just exposed recently in Korea by a public investigation and report with respect to the exportation/abduction of many children in order to profit from overseas adoptions.
ep.23 if I were Xu Jing Fu I would not trust Chu Zhao's offer of fealty at all. No facial tension showing poor character -- CZ is too honorable and prett.y. We are meant to believe that CZ is secretly on the side of justice, but if he cant pretend to be corrupt he would not, in reality, be accepted by the Minister.

About that romance tag, the FL did have a bratty Romance with her "big brother" in Family By Choice. Here she keeps being rescued from being a brat, from nearly busting the smart girl persona to pieces. Jin Wook is the acting power in the show overall, and yes, they could work as an older man-younger woman couple. That exasperation could become fondness -- he wants someone to take care of. To whit, Hash-time.
This makes me want to define soap opera as something you cant look away from because it is so offthewall. The premises just have to be good enough to argue about with friends, and the actors need to be excellent to look at. I'll take the waking up naked scene in your sunbaes bed over shower scenes anyday!
But did anyone notice the diss on Law and the City in ep.6... during the flashback to the ousting of Kwon Na hyeon (?the famous female mentor of the ML), someone insulted her by saying she should go down to Seocho-Dong where 'it is said that some lawyers with separate accounts have merged to call themselves a law firm'!
ep6, ! Osang sik/ Yoo Joon Sang goes into a karaoke room ****faced, and sings, but not in the usual offkey way, instead perfectly in tune. Its more surreal than anything, and it makes me love the actor even more. Which is weird too.,
Ep16. The character of Dong Xuan 'er, written as a spoiled manipulative brat is repulsive enough but to imply that a respected senior cultivator still had this deeply flawed personality just because she is a woman is insulting and disgusting. I love the show. am addicted and wont stop watching, but this stuff is a consequence of the audience-writer bond being boy-on-boy, and I say boy advisedly, and it makes me want to shriek and tear my hair out.
What is Wang Chan talking about when he tells his two companions to keep their mouths shut because "in (where? Yue), 'they' dont talk the way you do". do his buddies curse a lot or do they speak a different dialect or a different language? (obviously I am working my way thru the early edpisodes of the drama, ep.9)...mandarin speakers out there, is there a pun or a joke or are the guys just speaking Cantonese? ?

Jung Chae Yeon's character is such a brat. Understandable altho insanely annoying for her to act like a 9-yr old at 16 (?) when the boys left, but not ok as a woman in her 20's. Juwon is really unsympathetic, even if they all love her because she is still such a baby.
I started this to see JCY's work before Beyond the Bar, so I guess it is good to her for playing two radically different women distinctly.
Well, that's it for me. I hate the almost-incest trope which is why I didnt watch this to begin with.
I would watch anything with Bae Hyeon Sung, based on thi show -- he showed great emotional range and he looks like a six-year younger Park Bogum.
And of course the adorable Chois, the two dads.
Hwang Inyoup is an almost-there actor in this show. He loses focus and consistency often enough to make his charisma almost-enough but not quite. I am dropping this at ep.9-10, and I will try out another of his main role shows (Why Her?) in which I hope he presents better .
