On The Proper Way to Write Love Jul 21, 2025
I looked at a sample of how the characters look in the manga and I really feel like the actors should have switched roles based on the visuals. The hairdresser, Hiroshi, has shorter hair than Natsuo in the manga and he is also taller than Natsuo. It makes me wonder why they decided to cast the way they did because usually JBls are spot on with the actors they choose for roles.

I'm assuming the drama is doing each item on the bucket list, checking off one item episode. I'm assuming chapters…
That makes sense! My line of thinking was based on knowing that there is a second volume to the manga (not yet available in english so I haven't read) and I assumed they were going to include material from that. I never would have expected a one volume manga to be stretched out into 12 eps otherwise.
I was really expecting a kiss to happen in ep 3. They first kissed when it was raining in the manga around the time of their first date. That being said, I do understand why they're putting it off due to this being stretched out into 12 eps but I am hoping that there will be a good amount of eps with them as an established couple.

I'm pretty surprised.
I adore the webtoon and highly recommend people to read it https://www.lezhinus.com/en/comic/our_youth
Of course, I prefer the webtoon and some scenes were combined, added, and left out but that's how adaptations work. Perhaps it is because my expectations were low but I loved watching this.
Their reunion scene where Hirukawa picks up a drunk Minase is much better in the webtoon and I don't know why they diverted from that.
With more than a handful of scenes that had no reason to be changed/removed/added, I do rate this an 8.5.
I think if I'd never read the webtoon, my rating would probably be higher. There aren't many shows, especially bls, that I would rewatch but I could see myself rewatching this.

The premise sounds so good and then you have the actors. I'm excited because I can't see this being bad in any way.

I can't believe I just watched the last episode. It kind of feels surreal because my weekly joy is being taken away from me.
Seeing Ryoma-kuuun skip a little when he was walking with the wine bottle was so darling. I love him and Haruto; they are such a lovely and perfect couple.
I sincerely hope that more of their story can be adapted in some way.

I really appreciate Oshiroen for subbing this and doing so consistently! I would constantly check the drama-otaku gofile page throughout the week and am so glad to have been able to watch this amazing bl.

One more episode left :(
-Idk why I was surprised that Haruto’s dad is that evil. I was like omg he’s really going to kill his son?
-With a second action scene, this should have the action tag on it. I’m glad it showed that part where Haruto escaped.
-Crybaby Ryoma-kun was very cute. Hama Shogo is an amazing actor.
-Their little ring tap at the end is too damn endearing especially since it was Ryoma that initiated it. I love them.

That was such a twist at the end. I would have never guessed that this was personal for Haruto.
Also, I am very dramatic cause why did I gasp when I see the ring in the box. As soon as it showed the box and Ryoma picked it up I was like “no, he didn’t right…right...he didn’t cause, right? he didn’t?” and Haruto did!
I love the preview for the next episode cause I get to see crybaby Ryoma. So sad two episodes left of my joy.

I hated this movie. It was extremely frustrating to watch. I'm glad I watched it with other people and not by myself because I would have hated it even more.

This movie can cover such severe and serious topics but there were moments that didn’t make sense. Why would Jeong-do’s friends hold him back from beating up the sexual assaulter that is responsible for Mr. Cho’s death and has disturbing content on his laptop? Where is the catharsis that is well-liked and expected in media? The “good guys”/officers get brutally beat (and even die) and the same couldn’t be reciprocated towards the antagonists. Yeah, I didn’t like that. I kept waiting for more and was dissatisfied at every scene. There are many other parts I can go on about that shouldn’t have been there or were unnecessarily prolonged, but some comments here have stated some of my gripes.
Also, the main character, Jeong-do, is a martial artists prodigy but the majority of the time, I’ve just seen that man run and throw shit. The action aspect was barely there in this, and it was disappointing since that was the main reason it was put on.
I still don’t know why this is referred to as an action-comedy film and I am truly surprised by the rating on here.
The only good aspects were Jeong-do’s hot father (played by Lee Hae Young) and the acting from all actors was pretty good; Kim Woo-bin knows how to cry.

I'm pretty sure this is both the actors' first bl role. I hope to see them in future bls cause they're killing it.

I will never forgive that guy with the side part and curled hair for ruining their honey toast café date.
The way Ryoma-kuuuun takes whatever people say until it is about his man Haruto. He’s amazing. Haruto is amazing. They’re amazing.
I don’t blame Yamaoka-san for lying like that especially if his old self got paid really well. Happy retirement.
The ending was so needed and endearing. I swear I was thinking how a kiss would be the perfect end to that scene and then they did. I silently screamed. Both of their eyes glazed with sadness and determination. It was perfect and emotionally charged with comfort.
I won’t address the very end of the episode cause it killed vibes.
The preview for ep 10 shows that Ryoma is going to get to know more about Haruto and fight for him.

Just finished episode 8.
Every episode that is released becomes my favorite episode.
This one was truly Marvelous. Amazing. Incredible. Fabulous.
I cannot think of a show that surprises me and satisfies me like this one.
I am already mourning its completion.

They were so cute in this. I just can’t believe I get to witness this and Ryoma is adjusting so well. The rings were so such a surprise and they’re really nice. Ngl before the ring reveal, when Ryoma said something about he wanted to give Haruto a memento to remember that night I did whisper to himself “Your ass?!”
I really adored how hesitantly and slowly Ryoma went towards Haruto when he asked him to hold him.
Now the only obstacles in their story are Haruto’s past and them being work partners.

Title Love in the Big City Spoiler
I would like to preface by saying that I have not read the novel. I will be spoiling below because I just want to share my scrambled thoughts without this being an actual review. I did not binge the series and watched two eps per day in a span of four days which could be a factor in my views idk but I am throwing this out there in case any of the happenings I have mentioned are incorrect.

Love in the Big City was, expectedly, good. Would I ever rewatch it? No.
Again, this is based on a novel that I have not read, and this is its adaptation so I cannot analyze the difference.
Now when it comes to the characters of the story, I’ve seen people be very harsh with Go Young’s (GY) character which I find odd. He was very human. We have seen him dishonest, hypocritical, considerate, sweet, bratty, justifiably angry, unjustifiably angry, and so on. When he made that remark after Nam Gyu’s (NG) passing that was to the effect of how he could’ve been happy or fulfilled with him, I thought he was so selfish but there was appreciation to see that because it does display how people can be. What I didn’t like was not seeing him change much. The change I wanted to see was him realizing that he didn’t need someone to be happy. I wished he watched some Rupaul’s Drag Race or even seen a clip of Rupaul saying “If you don't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” Honestly, I couldn’t care less if he did end up with someone, but I wanted that realization for him because it is very true in actuality, in real life. Even the part where he was having his thought monologue about how Kylie really did have an impact on him and how much he wanted to talk about it felt surface-level but I am willing to attribute this to the translation and timing. Maybe it would have felt more profound with different words and at a different time-frame in GY's life. I am willing to make that excuse since I was expecting this series/story to make me cry and it didn't so I do feel betrayed. Overall, Go Young felt stagnant and, personally, I don’t like that in my main characters especially when years of their life are shared with me.

I didn’t really care for Nam Gyu’s character until I realized the actor was from The New Employee series which made me like him. Bias aside, I did feel that killing him off was unnecessary and that they could have had him move. His character felt irrelevant since his death didn’t really show much of an impact on Go Young’s characterization but that is fine. Yeong Su was a character I didn’t care for, as well, and William Habibi was the expected character. I was waiting for the typical dl married man and would have been surprised if there wasn’t one. What did surprise me is that the actor for William Habibi isn’t even Japanese and is Korean. Gyu Ho’s character is one I did kind of like. Not sure what exactly what I liked about him. Perhaps because he was a better fit for our main character??? I won’t lie, all the love interests characters felt one-dimensional, so I didn’t really care for any of them. I’m sure they were fleshed out well in the novel.
The characters I really enjoyed were Go Young’s friends like Eun Soo and Jitae. I won't gush about them but they were imperative to the story. I did wish Mi Ae had more presence as the story progressed but that’s life- people become distant so I am glad that Go Young’s main friends were there until the end.
A side tangent gripe pertained to how Gyu Ho (GY) was mentioned towards the end with the bartender sending Young specific drinks that GH made sure to put on his own tab with the bartender also mentioning GY was going to be back in Korea. Not sure why this was mentioned and maybe I am lacking an appreciation for story-telling. That being said, I can convince myself that this portrays the complexity of people which adds to the realism of Gyu Ho’s indirect characterization that in turn says something about Go Young’s and how he didn’t try harder? Yeah.

From my view, this series was hyped due to the content (the sexual parts) it showed and the unjust controversy that the show and actors experienced. The part of the show I do see frequently mentioned by people is the one with Yeong Su (you know the one with the table and carrying). I think this is the most “mainstream” Korean bls/lgbtqia+ stories out there with it “pushing the envelope” but there are others that are seemingly not mainstream/not well known that do exist in Korean media (One Summer Night comes to mind).
Ultimately, I felt no respite and no satisfaction with this story. The way the story came to full circle towards the end with Go Young single and back with his friends was okay. I think there could be a lot to think about with that ending but I was hoping for something more substantial based on all the hype I came across with this series. With the serious topics in the story, I am sure the novel is superior in the way they were addressed compared to the adaptation but this could have been better.

if anyone can answer, please do: So, when Go Young was hesitant in hugging Nam Gyu in public with that lock scene, was it because he actually cared or he just didn’t want to hug him? Later we see how Go Young wants to be publicly affectionate with Yeong Su (YS), so it made me wonder if he just liked YS more or if time made him realize that he shouldn’t care.

Ep. 6.
I knew it was going to be the next day from Haruto's attire but Ryoma really realized how much he missed Haruto as soon as he was gone lol.
In my last comment I mentioned how it'd be something if Ryoma could actually fight so seeing him get his ass beat asap was quite fitting.
The group continuing to kick him as he gave his heart to heart with Haruto was funny to see cause when he first started and they weren't hitting him it felt out of place.
Ryoma was very right to call out Haruto for not being able to help earlier lmaoo.
I was very shocked and giddy to see that they kissed. It was something I prepared myself to not keep my hopes up for and now they're sharing the bed?
The preview for episode 7 made me gasp hot spring vacation and they look like they're going to actually sleep together????

Just noticed the rating is increasing. I last noted that it was a 7.7 and now it is a 7.9. I'm expecting this to be at a higher rating like 8.5 or at least higher than the Cherry Magic jp series.
