I was thinking what the writer is trying to convey to us through this love triangle. I think that is "Fate". I mean judging by how the story went so far (HJP chose NDS's name from the newspaper, SDM found NDS when he wanted to sell the ball, etc). There are many variables in life, some in our control and others out of our control. But I'm quite realistic, so I would say this love triangle is created by HJP & Grandma. They chose to use NDS name, who is basically a stranger, and create this series of events that leads to the love triangle.

As SML has a childhood connection with the FL, and even with the grandma. And the SML even did so many things to FL like what you said.
