so much to say about this week's episode! the comedy is comedying and they keep surprising me with how they're willing to stick with the og while also putting their own spin. for instances, i really thought by the first two episodes they were trying to make kongdech more digestible than kurosawa; not a married man, girldad, not as pushy therefore a more acceptable love interest. however, this episode proved me wrong in the best way; kurosawa's (kongdech) unreasonableness in the original is a very important way to move the plot that clashes with haruta's (heng) selfishness and well, stupidity and im glad this show also considers it important. i did think this episode dragged a little towards the end but at the same time im not sure how much this version is planning to adapt to judge the pace. hengmo's bond has been so well established i thought we were much further in episodes because of it... and we're getting restaurant scene next week so im not complaining! i do think ossans love is not for everyone and i would go as far as to say it is a show you can appreciate properly once it's completed, so if you're hesitant about continuing it maybe you can wait to experience it as a binge—if it's anything like the og then it will be worth it!
wow!! ep2 really exceeded my expectations and reassured me on the character writing. seeing how everyone seemed a bit toned down from their og counterparts i was afraid they were planning to tone down *everything* but im glad to see they somewhat kept everyone's flaws and weren't afraid of keeping conflict (*cough* unlike a certain other gmmtv jp adaptation). heng is supposed to be an ass at the start and i enjoyed the hell out of that head smack (thank you chicha!) the mo-kongdech fight scene was hilarious, especially when they immediately went into work mode after😭 so far i think (just like in the og) mo is my favorite character. the ossan here is so sweet and demure though, im rooting for him to at least get a chance. but im also glad they kept his unhinged (and problematic) tendency to ignore whatever heng is trying to say when it comes to the two of them and act like they've been dating for 10 months or something.
even Love or Dead movie sequel is 7.5but somehow Ossan's Love Returns is 8.5Math is not mathing, all OL are around…
i assume you havent seen returns? because returns is like one of the best dramas ever, not just as bl but as a family drama as well. it's no wonder it got such a high rating in comparison, it got rid of everything that made other ossans love seasons not as likeable and fed it into the domestic bl trend that started after it (namely nanitabe and cherimaho). very clever enjoyable season that with its new runtime could also flesh out side characters properly.
guys even the og and hk ossans love are only rated 7.5 on here, it's no wonder episode one got this low rating. it's not "the haters" "reviewbombing", it is just the "curse" of ossans love. once taken out of its japanese context OL targets a niche audience when it comes to its romance and comedy and will probably be not as easily digestible as other shows. a lot of people will realize a few episodes in this isnt their thing and move on.
Wow, your review got even more heavily downvoted than mine :)And you did such a good job explaining, why it sucked...…
thank you! i'm not sure how i can look at downvotes but now im curious 😭 but oh well i expected my opinion to be unpopular, this adaptation clearly was not targetting manga readers. happy 2025!
I agree with everything you said but especially your points about eps 8 and 12 which sank Achi's character for…
It almost feels like reverse character development? Achi's most redeeming quality is that compared to other versions of Adachi, he is more quickly accepting of Karan's feelings. But then as the show progresses and they get closer he just... loses any sense of agency? When the character of Adachi is the exact opposite; he initially lets himself be swayed by Kurosawa but as an act of love towards him he becomes more and more active in their relationship.
i know some of you are eager to get your lick back for cm fans doubting taynew but for the love of toyota yuu…
there are things cm jdrama could do and things it couldnt. there are things the thai drama could do and things it couldn't. the best cherry magic adaptation is the chinese radio drama anyway💗
i know some of you are eager to get your lick back for cm fans doubting taynew but for the love of toyota yuu let's stop the dick measuring contest. you cannot compare a 20 minute show with a 40 minute show. you cannot compare a show that was made when 5 volumes were out with a show that was made when 12 volumes and a whole other drama+movie adaptation to draw inspiration from were out. you cannot compare a show that came out in 2020, on a channel that until then had seen aired only one other queer show to a show that came out in 2023/2024 on a tv channel that's almost exclusively known for the amount of bls they produce.
I still have mixed feelings about this show. The last two episodes were so amazing, definitely more satisfying…
Again, I do blame myself for setting my expectations too high but I also blame the promotion of this show for implying they would focus on the manga and the parts beyond the jdrama only to actually not do that
I still have mixed feelings about this show. The last two episodes were so amazing, definitely more satisfying than the jdrama, they almost made up for most of my other complaints. But I'm watching the anime at the same time and it's just reminding me of how much time and potential this one wasted by sticking closer to the jdrama/jmovie and not the manga. Karan and Achi are an adorable couple and they totally give off Kurodachi vibes. Just like their jdrama counterparts, they have been whitewashed in comparison to their manga version and watchers seem to like that. In this case they have also been changed to adjust to a cultural context which was fun to watch. Especially Achi; I feel like if Adachi met his Thai counterpart he'd feel intimidated by their gap in social skills lol. Jinta/Min were my highlight of this show even though they resembled nothing close to the original characters (who i also like, but in a different way). Pai and Rock just came off as some kind of fujoshi self insert and I'm kind of disappointed that the show has taken a lot of writing choices from the jdrama but didn't want to keep her aroace (or at the very least let her be single). I found most of it enjoyable, and some original writing choices I found more fun than the original like the portrayal of Achi's and Jinta's friendship, the whole Achi and Karan working on a product together, Achi's Loy Krathong surprise date, Duj as a character etc. But when something bothered me (i.e. the entirety episode 8) it stuck out a lot more than those enjoyable parts. I feel like it didn't utilize its 40 minute runtime to the fullest, especially since there was quite a lot that could be explored from the manga had they not stuck on the jdrama formula, and they shouldn't have added a 3rd couple, especially one so painfully heterosexual. It's weak as an adaptation of Cherry Magic but a great show as a stand-alone. A great introduction to Cherry Magic but you should explore more of its adaptations to get the whole picture of what made it famous enough to have this adaptation; especially the manga
I didn't read the whole manga but just the fact that they didn't make Achi break up with Karan because of his…
i don't really understand what you're responding to? i'm saying that i expected this show to be more close to the manga, not the jdrama. it's not a matter of who did what best.
if you told me last year that in a season where tsukutabe s2 and two cherry magic adaptations are airing ossans love would be the most wholesome show i would have laughed in your face. anyway this show is making NUMBERS once again so idk they should milk it some more because im not ready to say goodbye to hrmk
i wish this version wasn't so influenced by and unreasonably loyal to the j-drama because i really wanted to see…
i saw a lot of praise for them breaking the ep 11 curse which i agree with and honestly they should have ditched the "basic" drama pacing way earlier. since 11&12 are recent volumes im going to assume the writers of this only had up until vol. 10 as reference. that's like 4 volumes of (ad)achi without his magic; it would have been so interesting to watch. i don't get how you double down on this NOT being a remake but your writing choices show more faith to the jdrama than the manga... is the manga not good enough or something?
i wish this version wasn't so influenced by and unreasonably loyal to the j-drama because i really wanted to see a longer adaptation's take on the events of volumes 6-10
as soon as i saw achi unable to walk because he's drunk i was counting down the seconds until karan would appear, and he did, my predictable little creep (affectionate). achi please don't approach random children and give them candy??? also stop showing me that necklace everytime they take it off i just wish they would toss it away FOR GOOD. ok jokes aside episode 11 was for me one of, if not the strongest episode of this show thus far. after a long string of disappointment i finally felt like i was watching cherry magic. and im glad it was this episode because we get one of the most important scenes in the entire story; which btw was amazingly done. jdrama lacked in that aspect (cn radio drama never got to it *sobs*) so i'm glad i found my satisfaction here. honestly all the intimacy scenes in this episode were the best i don't think i felt this much chemistry from them in any of the other episodes… i was also surprised to see they kept the j-movie's plot point of adachi collapsing but it was well done and not as dramatic (i also thought their version of that scene was the drunk scene but apparently not). all in all it's a great point to move on to the events of episode 12! next episode features my favorite volume (volume 8!!!!!!!) i'm very excited to see how cmth goes about it.
as for the side couples jinta min were adorable as per usual (first half of the episode belongs to them fight me) i love how jinta is just dying inside all the time…. on the other hand pai/rock? i don't get the appeal at all :/
