episode 21 is a flashback to the past as told by Su Chaoge's maid.
She said a couple had a son and daughter. They opened a medical clinic. The daughter at 17 grew to be beautiful. A family came to visit. ...we see Su Chaoge (who goes by the name "Qing Qing") bump into a young man (who looks like Xie Qing Chen). She exclaims, "are you blind?!".. to which he replies, "as a daughter of a doctor/medical professional should know.. I have an eye disease.." Shows them talking later together and he mentions she has a foul temper and who would marry her.. He asks if he could feel/touch her face.. and says "Ding" (his younger brother?) says she's beautiful and he's curious.. I think he asks if she'd consider marrying him ..and then their conversation mentions something about viewing "flowers" which is probably something else they're discussing, but Google translate likes to give us brain damage.
We get the impression that these two beautiful youths like each other. The last scene is the young man talking w/the maid about "flower" viewing and she (the maid) says oh he's talking about Qing Qing (Su Chaoge).

Just watched epi 20. Su Chaoge's maid is very protective over her.. and the Chen guy that looks like her past love (that supposedly died) may be his younger brother who is trying to get revenge for his brother's death. At the end of the episode, the maid finds out his true identity and motive for trying to poison her.. and says "Let me tell you a story" (I used a translator since it isn't subbed yet) and then the episode ends. Next episode or so should give more background on the plot.

yes, stepmother.. I watched till episode 19 (last 2 without subs). That character seems suspicious, but cannot tell. The series is chaotic and somewhat of a hot mess. In epi 19, the Chen guy pours her a drink, but her maid puts up a fuss and she doesn't drink it. Each episode is less than 3 minutes. The first episode shows a drunk, blindfolded old(er) man who seems to be the emperor. He is wandering around the room with a whip in one hand and drink on the other. There's a young girl (FL) who has whip marks and is hiding w/a knife in-hand. As she's about to stab the old guy passed out on the bed, the 9th prince pulls her back and takes her knife. She kisses him and says if he kills the old guy she'll be his.. they continue to kiss.. A voiceover then says the 9th prince becomes the emperor and that woman (FL) becomes the empress dowager. Her Su family seizes power.
Each episode abruptly ends and the next starts at a different scene so it's chaotic and sort of a fragmented/pieced together story. The FL appears to be into pretty boys and hung up on someone from her past that supposedly died, but there's someone that looks like him working for the emperor. The empress dowager has a terrible reputation for being immoral and a bit of a debauchee. She also takes no nonsense from the harem. (unsure if those concubines are the former emperor's or the new emperor's (formerly the 9th prince))
Along the way, there are attempted assassinations of the empress dowager, Su Zhaoge..
The 9th prince, now emperor, seems to be in love with the empress dowager and asks for her to become his empress, but she wants something else... which I'm still waiting to find out at episode 18.
