He is also suffering from his PTSD and survivor guilt, he also gates to feel fragile and lost a lot of people. It's in his nature he loves to protect other. These characters are are human beings they make mistakes that make sense with their personality and the actors are doing great. Not every drama character has to be perfect, we only need to see people make mistakes to also learn ourselves.
