I dont know why but I find all the scenes where Alina Zhang's role tries to seduce her workaholic husband sooo cute.

Title Destined
"even succeeds in taming her husband, becoming able to stand up to him and change him from a drunken playboy into a brave, honest and righteous man"

Haha reminds me of why I picked up Court Lady a long time ago. A choice that turned out to be...

To be honest I'm not ready to see another woman suffering endlessly. I'll read some comments and wait till this gets to 20 eps before I decide to pick it up

The modern dramas always have women fighting for their lives at work 😩😅
LOL! COUGH Flight to You

Eh this OST takes a massive dump on most modern Chinese costume dramas, quite frankly. Far more evocative, a lot…
😭😭😭 there's no way you actually exist bruh. Well I will reply in depth on my break. I think I’ll just direct message you then, so this thread doesn't get too long. In the meantime... how do you view other's watchlist? Isnt it only the 10 most recent watched that shows on their immediate profile?

Well to be honest you're poking the bear there because I can talk FOREVERRR about cinematography and character development. 😅 I'll make this brief before I go to bed.

I'd say for me, its not just about how pretty or in place everything looks for a drama to get the cinematography scale. It's about how the camera pans scene to scene, the positioning of characters on screen when they speak, the symbolism of certain objects ( and if the show is OP, there will be recurring symbols (motifs)) that are subtle and yet thought provoking when found. ) Appropriate lighting of certain scenes, shadows, and the makeup/visual representation of actors all add to cinematography. Not to mention location choices for scenes. There are also certain dramas like The Wind Blows in Longxi (gray and blue hued, darker lighting, predominately indoors, intense shadowing for serious scenes) or Arsenal Military Academy (deeper oranges, a bit more sepia, thoroughly researched interior design and clothes styling from the Republican Era time period) where although the scene filtering and lighting are unique (and can turn certain audiences away) they fit the drama to a T.... almost unbearablly! Dammit, I think my words are all over the place. A Dream of Splendor was well done. I would also recommend:

- The Longest Day in Chang'an
- Joy of Life
- The Red Sleeve (albeit, this is a Korean period piece)
- Nirvana in Fire 1/2
- Love Like the Galaxy
- Rise of the Phoenixes

Actually, movies are often the strongsuit for Chinese cinema when it comes to cinematography. House of Flying Daggers, The Red Cliff...Haha time to move on.

As for character development, I guess context is needed. Before I got into appreciating Asian dramas I was an extensive manga / comic reader, and I ultimately picked up wuxia novels. As a result, I am someone accustomed to following characters over longer periods of time where it's easier to document their growth. Luckily, film can be a quick but thorough medium. When it comes to Korean productions I find that usually the full cast is able to grow at a steady and healthy rate despite the shortened episode frame (16 episodes vs. Chinese typical 40+ episodes) Ironically, it's not that mainland Chinese dramas are bad with character development. They're just bad when it comes to women. 她们不太好。Oftentimes there is the typical situation where the FL, no matter how well done, becomes naive or insufferable to further the plot.

That being said, I am not one easily tricked by 'forced redemption for redemption sake.' There are too many times in certain dramas where abusive male characters that start off absolutely horrible are redeemed just because they act cute, look sad a few times, or get a demonicly traumatizing backstory. ( Or, dammit, the actor is hot so the show panders to the audience's vanity.) For me, good character development entails an individual showing up with a set of flaws that are reasonably lessened or buffed out through significant experiences, truly emphatic dialouge, self-awareness, and then self-discipline. Or, a character changes their perception of the world and themself through numerous valuable interactions and experiences with supporting characters. This is why I'm so obsessed with "bromance" and "sismance" as some people have coined it. The natural growth from a stranger, to acquaintance, to friend, and the events that come with it, is a gold mine for character enhancement. Then of course there are also familial relations. Too many times character growth is paired with romance to the point of toxicity. I.E, you make me want to be a better person, I love you so I must change for you. It's not completely unnatural (it happens in the real world) but it's a cheap cliche for it to be the main mode of development every time.

DAAAAAAMN THAT IS LONG! I will stop now.

Well, let me send some recs for character development your way.

Nirvana in Fire 1: Namely, PRINCE Xiao Jingyan (one of my favorite characters of all time - who goes from insufferably self-righteous and distrusting to well-rounded and rational.

The Bad Kids

Nirvana in Fire 2: One of the main characters, Xiao Pingjing (played by the unnaturally talented Liu Haoran 刘昊然) who is forced to mature from a playful military family's son to a capable general through painful (but necessary) national experiences.

Under the Skin: The 2nd Male lead goes from fierce hatred and blaming the other lead for another's death to a blossoming friendship that becomes sworn brotherhood. This is a also a crime thriller with the interesting premise of using a Painter as the key to solving cases.

A League of Nobleman : the three main leads, (especially the role played by Jing Boran) deter from their natural flaws, whether that may be lack of integrity, irrationality, stubbornness etc. and grow ever intelligent as they work together to undermine political threats and solve mysteries.

Go Ahead : (stellar growth from characters of the family all around)

Rattan

And more...but if I say anything more you might throw up from reading too much!!

Oh yikes. Nah I wasn't impassioned just confused. Your paragraphs about OST quality when they were not mentioned came out of the blue for me so I was lost on the purpose. So when I expressed that and you seemed passive aggressive (e.x " P L A C E M E NT"), I became more bewildered and cautious... Well, emotions often transfer horribly over text. I am often deadpan online. Also I'm more of a cinematography and character development type of person, but maybe if you open a discussion for this show you can get a good concersation. I do agree with you that the OST had a RPG vibe. 👍🏾 Good day to you then.

I mean.. people have their interests and hobbies lol. Otherwise, why would kisskh post news about ratings?…
Oh, I guess that makes sense buzz wise. I may be a bit old school but I'm one of those fierce debater types that likes articles going in on plot points and characters in dramas, so that I can conversate in the comments. I guess those are called Editorials or something? I want to see more of those. Maybe there's a special tab for it I'm not seeing.

I think this is an unfair comment considering the timing.Kyungsoo's latest drama, Bad Prosecutor, received very…
Bruh.
You wrote a dissertation to a month old comment about me saying his traction on this site isnt what I was expecting and flipping it to me saying he has a tanking career? You listed numerous aspects about D.Os recent career choices that is obvious to anyone who has been following him. Then, you go on to say "Kyungsoo can't get on the radar of the global kdrama audience, because he very rarely appears in rom-com dramas (which is preferred by 90% of the kdrama audience) and let's face it, Kyungsoo doesn't have the ideal, tower over the female lead kinda tall and muscular male lead look"
How is this assessment (which I agree with) any more 'fair' than the observation I made? Ironically, its more like you wrote an explanation post to my comment.
No offense to you personally, but I think fans on this site need to slowly and carefully read comments before inserting connotations upon the commenters.

Hm. Maybe my succinctness rubbed you wrong? Inevitably, I said ✨️P LA C E M E N T✨️ of OST since there is a disconnect from how music is seeded into a scene in current Cdramas versus... those from the 2000s lol. Which may lead to jarred responses and help low ratings. No one is braindead enough to compare classic OSTS to modern wuxia/xianxia ones unless they have a solid drama to stand on.
You replied to a comment from 2 years ago with a passionate paragraph answer disconnected from the original intent. Nothing was obvious. Idk what else can be explained here... 😅

Well .... obviously people care about ratings. Just like the people who paid actors and broadcast the show. I said the EXCESSIVE obsession is weird which is why I expressed that lol. Some MDL articles pop out consistent statuses for shows ratings to the point of exasperation.

I'm not sure what it says for the state and quality of dramas if you can barely watch any of them without skipping…
Agreed. For me I think it's because I came into asian dramas from being a manga and wuxia novel reader haha. I like the feeling of following characters over a long period of time.
