I have to be honest here. All fans know Kim Young Dae is easy on the eyes, but he doesn't have the acting range yet for heavy or emotionally driven scenes. He does great in comedies so no wonder I liked his roles in his 2 previous dramas -- Shooting Stars and Forbidden Marriage.
I've been wondering why I find the historical scenes quite boring (even though the script is not that bad) and finally figured it was his performance afterall. He doesn't have the capability to convey emotions through microexpressions yet. And well, it doesn't help that I just finished My Dearest when I started this drama. For those who watched that and Nam Goong Min's performance, then yeah, you understand my point. His voice inflection is quite good, though, so hopefully, he grows into a better actor.
This drama ruined the detective dramas after it for me. It set the bar that high, but I used to watch a lot of detective dramas before, and now, I can't even remember when was the last time I watched one lol.
There's no such thing as a "neutral" review. Your views are as subjective as everyone else's. Saying ML has lack…
It's neutral because it has pros and cons is what I meant. I agree, all views are subjective when it comes to any form of entertainment because entertainment is afterall, based on preference. Charisma depends on different angles. Were you looking at it from the looks standpoint? Then yes, he has the charisma from that angle. The charisma I was looking at is from the intimidating and menacing demon angle. He doesn't have that since he doesn't have the acting range yet. He's quite a new actor who only played protagonist roles before. I'm neither his anti-fan nor avid fan since I've watched a lot of his dramas and liked some of them (Navillera and Nevertheless). And yes, I know female lead is a rich heiress, so she has the elegant mature outfits. However, the clothes are wearing her, and not the other way around.
Just in case you misunderstood that I'm a hater, I'm not. I didn't hate the first episode, but I didn't love it as well. So I'm neutral right now. I would love for this to get better though, afterall, we all watch dramas for the escapism.
Here's a neutral review for those who want to know what to expect:
This may be an amazing and unique drama...
If one hasn't seen Goblin, Tomorrow, Doom at Your Service, and the like.
First episode is not bad, but it doesn't stand out as well. In a nutshell, it's a high budget romcom.
A spoiler-free detailed review below for avid readers:
Casting or performance: Not bad. Male lead fits the seductive demon look but is not exactly intimidating (lack of charisma or gravitas probably). Female lead is a talented child-actress so a natural performance. However, it kinda looks like she's wearing somebody elses's clothes. Not sure, but it seems like the script is trying to picture an older or mature-looking woman. That didn't really play out well because the actress has the casual and youthful look instead.
Plot: Average. Lacks character building or connection, but hey, this is a fantasy drama. Well, the main focus is entertainment. Was kind of action-packed instead, so if their target-audience prefers that, then it succeeded, perhaps.
Production: High-budget so quite good cinematography. My guess is that it's paying homage to it's fantasy drama predecessors -- cool walk in the shadows (Goblin) and beautiful pink sky and ocean ending (Doom at Your Service).
Overall Verdict: Watchable. So will continue watching (My Dearest just ended so why not) since based on the preview, second episode will set the table.
Lee Se Yeong's character here is very much reminiscent of her Red Sleeve role which is giving me much nostalgia. The sageuks these past 2 years are definitely stepping up their A-game and that includes Red Sleeve and My Dearest.
I have a feeling it's because she's not the cookie-cutter Chinese beauty, and she doesn't really have idol dramas.…
She has a mature and androgynous runway model look because of her defined face features and her s-line body and broad shoulders. In other words, very femme-fatale, so the spunky or rich miss roles suit her well (villain roles would too). Majority of C-actresses have a baby-face cute look and skinny body. Check her pictures from Cannes if you haven't. The girl has the high fashion-look down to a tee.
Her acting was soo good in RWTW, havent seen her till now, she could definitely have been FL in many dramas i…
I have a feeling it's because she's not the cookie-cutter Chinese beauty, and she doesn't really have idol dramas. I think she's a serious actress who's picky with the roles and script.
look this might be the best drama airing rn but EP. 2 was kinda creepy no? that teacher def groomed her minor…
I felt the same way and wondered why nobody said anything about it before. Everything was great until that happened. It was icky in any angles. As a teacher myself, there's just no way to justify having a relationship with a minor. I can't even be friends with a student. I'll tell them I'm their teacher, no more no less.
Any new modern romance Cdrama coming like this one? Totally loved it 😍
Not exactly new since majority of new ones are just fluff with weak storyline, but here are some modern dramas with good storyline:
1. My Marvelous Fable 2. The Rational Life 3. She and Her Perfect Husband 4. Meet Yourself 5. Go Ahead 6. Yong-jiu Grocery Store 7. Mr. Fighting 8. Hi Venus 9. Sunshine By My Side
Special mention since this is more fantasy than a realistic one like this drama -- The Day of Becoming You.
