I think the reason why he's a level above other 2D characters is because he was the male lead in the original novels. you know the classic romance trope when the writer tends to come up that the ML is this almighty person who can do everything, unbeatable etc. so even if he's just a 2D, he doesn't entirely controlled by the law of the plot. he's a variable. he's still a 2D character tho.
