I agree. But I also agree with OP that a lot of dramas go this way. They also seeded it a little bit with the mysterious village where you have to go and disappear from the world. I can imagine the FL choosing to exchange her spot with Ning Fei so he can go be an adventurer and then the ML choosing to give up the throne and follow her. But I would hate that

Lol me too. They've made it pretty clear that his younger brother doesn't really have the mettle to be the emperor. I get the vibe there will be some drama where the second prince actually supports them. He ends up becoming emperor but FSG is like.. regent or otherwise available to help but retires to the countryside which I generally hate those types of endings. Especially when the characters are dedicated to the people/land. Seems weird.

What episode does the FL find out she is not related to the ML? I know that he knows early.. but just curious when it actually shifts to romance.

I don't actually have as much of an issue with the ending as I thought I would. It makes sense for Xuanye as a character because he has always put duty over his personal happiness. Also, the scene between him and his father at the end where they discuss the pass and how it doesn't work anymore.. I read that as a hint that the father would work to fix it. They've made it clear he's uniquely gifted with magic, and talking about it was unnecessary if that wasn't the intent. They show him turning it over in his hands and studying it.. My only wish is that the show had ended with him releasing the Moon Bugs looking over the land and then cut to Banxia going to Ganshan clinic and working with his dad to fix the pass. That way it shows she's still fighting for their relationship (which is what she would do) and there's progress on fixing the pass so they can freely visit each other sooner than 12 years from now.

It's one of my favorite scenes in the entire book. I remember when the show was put on pause years ago being like "of course it's right before the interrogation scene!" I was so excited to turn it on last night and finally watch and was very surprised they cut it.

Especially because the show already plays with Pei Su's sense of self and his morality. I don't think that scene would have been any more controversial than what we have already seen.

I assumed that was the case since they make a big deal that the CEO is the only son so he’s never been scared to lose his place. This may be the company using a surprise illegitimate son to help whip him in to shape essentially.

Yeah he is playing way against type and doesn’t even seem like the same person. It’s wild to watch this one at the same time as My Man is Cupid. You can really tell he gained weight to look like a ssireum wrestler. It’s wild.

I assume this is the case tbh. And I want it to be the case lol. It makes sense in a lot of ways because he seemed idealistic before but clearly has gone through a lot over the past 8 years. He's probably seen the corruption of the system first hand, etc. He has an obvious darkness to him, and I even think the person looks tall and thin like PHJ. Also as someone who first loved him from his turn in Bad Guys... I love him playing a psychopath lmao.

Yeah I think that was intentional to make it clear that the poison changed a lot of his physicality (including his voice) so that it's more reasonable to think he isn't recognized.

Yeah I found the dubbing so jarring in that first scene and then loved when it switched to his real voice. I assume it was just to make the point that he physically changed in multiple ways from the poison to make it more reasonable that people don’t recognize him.

I take it as an open ending, but I'm genuinely annoyed they didn't just give us a happy one. LSS has a line about how she'll tell him the things she wants to say "when they meet again". I get people commenting that gods can't reincarnate so he can't - but she seems to think he'll come back somehow. And the last shot is literally her saying "just like your dad" as it zooms in on the heart protecting scale that he refined with his ~divine essence~. It goes inside and you see him like meditating. I guess you can take it one of two ways - either, that's just another whisper of a memory (like the bo're life he created or the story she's telling their daughter). Just an imprint to prove that their love existed and won't be forgotten. Or it's a piece of his soul cultivating a body or otherwise resting until he can return. I choose to believe the latter since she said they'd meet again and because it's literally how the book ends. He does come back in the book. It's a HE. I just wish that Youku would have GIVEN us that since this show was 90% pain and angst.

I just wish Youku would say something honestly. The fact they haven't pulled the pages (or eps) down definitely suggests they still intend to air it. It's just wild they haven't given any sort of airing schedule - or indicated why they paused the eps.
