If you aren't into chewing your brains out trying to read between the lines and delve into the motivations and reasons for the way people behave in intimate relationships, in families, and in public and in official roles ... a slice of life look into court life .. then prolly won't be your cuppa
Very complex characters and shades of grey .. as well as a tough plot of twists and turns to keep track of.
The many names of each character also requires close attention.
Ideally if you are fluent in Mandarin (and I ENVY YOU SO if you are) it's going to rock your boat for sure ;-p
Youku English subbing is decent .. if you have an understanding of Chinese Period Drama and customs and mannerisms etc you'll be fine.
HUGELY annoyed of course because you know you are missing the TRUE gravy even as you are getting some meat .. LOL

Towards the end especially - a lot of battle scenes and forts and camp scenes are there.
There is a strong military strategy plot element also ..
BUT it's not primarily a BATTLE or War Drama ..
Which Dramas did you have in mind which had good battle scenes?
(in my mind its the ones on TTEOTM / LLTG / ARthdal Chronicles)

I have been scrounging around this "graveyard" looking for signs of life LOL
How I miss not having anyone watching this drama .. People don't know that this diamond is buried deep in the folds of Drama Years.
I scrolled ALL the way back to 7 years ago to see how people were reacting to the Drama when it was first released.
I gotta tell you .. the audience back then who flocked to this were FAR FAR more discerning than the ones now ..
Anyway the fact that it's retained am 8 Plus rating is amazing and a tribute to its lasting value.
It's truly a "crown" Drama amongst ALL period dramas .. Chinese and Korean (Empress Ki I thought was the ultimate, but this takes the cake IMO)
Youku Subs were terrible
