Gao Liang is just a very annoying character. I understand they wanted to use the “from rags to riches” trope but they never show any of his actual merits, instead cadres seem to like him for no apparent reason except for him coming from a poor background. When on the other hand you have Gu Yiye who is working his ass off just to be dismissed for being “too excellent”. That’s not to mention how some of the things GL does to win his gf are morally questionable. I think if the writers didn’t try to set him as the most likable guy we are supposed to emphasize with, people would have actually liked him more. If the writers wants audience to root for GL , they need to give us reasons to do so. Otherwise all the praise towards him comes off as unearned and unfair to other soldiers

The drama passed review for 48 episodes. Only 40 are getting aired. Also Xiao Zhan spent more time filming this than the other guy. They cut a lot, mostly Gu Yiye’s scenes as far as I can tell. Also they fired the director who was filming Gu Yiye’s plot. So I guess this is why some things in the plot seems weird and how we don’t see some important plot points. Still I am thoroughly enjoying Xiao Zhan’s acting, he didn’t waste a singe second of his screentime, he alone makes this worth watching
