Gao Liang and JNZ, the girl. The general interrupted the operation to make sure his daughter got some water and all that while other soldiers were dying. And after making a huge deal out of GYY and JNZ’s friendship all these higher ups seem to have no problem that she and Gao Liang are practically dating and are already having family dinners. Also when the general called Gao Liang his son and personally gave him a ride to the train cause he was his servant? Lol whut. It’s like army rules only apply to Gu Yiye

All the nepotism towards them is infuriating too

Gao Liang is just a very annoying character. I understand they wanted to use the “from rags to riches” trope but they never show any of his actual merits, instead cadres seem to like him for no apparent reason except for him coming from a poor background. When on the other hand you have Gu Yiye who is working his ass off just to be dismissed for being “too excellent”. That’s not to mention how some of the things GL does to win his gf are morally questionable. I think if the writers didn’t try to set him as the most likable guy we are supposed to emphasize with, people would have actually liked him more. If the writers wants audience to root for GL , they need to give us reasons to do so. Otherwise all the praise towards him comes off as unearned and unfair to other soldiers

The more episodes I watch, the more I love Gu Yiye.

That’s cause Gu Yiye was supposed to be the main protagonist, you can see how his character and plot line stand out. But despite the changes I’m still enjoying his story

The drama passed review for 48 episodes. Only 40 are getting aired. Also Xiao Zhan spent more time filming this than the other guy. They cut a lot, mostly Gu Yiye’s scenes as far as I can tell. Also they fired the director who was filming Gu Yiye’s plot. So I guess this is why some things in the plot seems weird and how we don’t see some important plot points.
Still I am thoroughly enjoying Xiao Zhan’s acting, he didn’t waste a singe second of his screentime, he alone makes this worth watching

Which episode are you on? from what I’ve seen it’s very fast paced .does it slow down later?

I feel the same. I thought this drama would be boring cause of the military theme and everything but it’s actually entertaining, I’m really enjoying it so far

I just can’t believe how much he improved. Xiao Zhan’s acting is next level here, and the scene you mentioned highlights that well. It’s rare to see such a good performance in a cdrama.

Yes, there is romance but it is not the focus of the plot
