Sorry I know this is completely unrelated but has anyone here listened to the song ‘8’ by Billie Eilish? I can’t help but thinking about this drama every time that song is on. The lyrics, it’s like Saiko wrote it from her heart. And on top of that the song is called ‘8’. EIGHT ffs. It’s just so weird.
Seriously the rating, please tell me y’all didn’t rate that low just because the ending was not your typical…
I like Sakaguchi Kentaro, I really do. Believe me, he was one of the reasons I started watching this movie. Yes, his acting here might be as good as the 2 leads but I can’t with the comments here (and on Letterboxd) praising his character as if he was the best bit of this movie. No lol wake tf up girls, open your eyes. He was the WORST. Even worse than Jun’s character. Like, what kind of man asked his girlfriend “Will you love me more if I save you?” when she was in danger and asking for help??? For real though he really made me thought that creepy stalker was sent by him to scare her and force her running to him for help. And also the part where he got jealous over the phone call, he raped her for fucks sake?!? Well, not really but it clearly was NOT consensual. I mean I’m so confused reading the comments and reviews, did I watch the same Narratage movie with them?? Anyway I’m still glad this time Kentaro didn’t settle for a likeable supporting character in a love triangle, his character was much more complex in this one and you could tell it was more challenging for him and he did it well. He reunited with Arimura Kasumi in Shoshite Ikiru in 2019 and I can’t wait to watch it.
Seriously the rating, please tell me y’all didn’t rate that low just because the ending was not your typical shoujo ending. This movie is good. Very well done, written and acted. I admit I do have a few problems with it but 6.5 is just ridiculous. And what’s with the 2 foreign language reviews that gave this movie below average ratings?? seriously??
First of all, I must say that there’s many things I liked from this movie. Namely the way the 2 main characters bonded over time, it was just so ideal to me. They reached out for each other when it was darkest in their lives and they knew how to save each other and gave each other the strength to move on. And on top of that they bonded over their common interest: films. Like, can you imagine? It’s like they found their perfect soulmate. If I were one of them, I’d have fell so hard and never let the other go. Also the silence was cleverly used. I mean, yes, this movie is long and slow and quiet but I never once felt like it was dragging. Heck, some moments nearly gave me anxiety because it felt so intense and suffocating just by seeing the characters’ feelings. And I’m still baffled that some people said this movie was forgettable lol it’s been almost 2 days and I can’t stop thinking about it, even when i watched other movies and drama. Maybe it just hit the right spot in me.
Just one thing though, the men in this movie were really jerks sometimes, 2 of them, it was really triggering. I mean they really made my blood boil with how they treated the female lead. I thought it was a flaw of this movie, but when I really thought about it, it’s just the characters being selfish because they were not flawless human beings, which was probably why I didn’t particularly like any of the 3 characters, I even found them so unlikable at times. But their relationships were very well depicted and I found the movie as a whole very interesting.
Overall I enjoyed it. Underrated movie. 8.5/10 with high rewatch value. As I said at the beginning, it’s definitely not your typical shoujo movie and certainly not for everyone.
Also can someone who likes this movie give it a decent review asap. Please give it the justice it needs. My English is not good enough to transfer all my feelings into words so I can’t do it.
i really want to start this because i really like Hirugao but i'm scared of the ending. i think i'll come back when this one finishes airing and check the spoilers.
damn, this was... amazing, it got my attention from beginning to end. i’m still in awe. the acting was astounding, more like breathtaking. Both Tao and Kyoko really turned the fake into reality, they were so smooth that i really believed they truly switched their faces for this movie. and to top it all off, Aimer for the theme song... oh god, my adrenaline is still going wild right now i’m willing to call this movie ‘perfect’.
Thank you for reviewing this drama! I've also seen it recently, and I loved it! I am also a follower of Nojima…
Hi. I actually know a little Japanese and could understand a little bit of that part. Basically, when everyone appeared in front of Takako then Kengo said "You can talk to us" (meaning "you can share your problems with us" because she had always been the one that listened to everyone's problems and rarely talked about hers) and Takako had finally come to admit that she was not strong and was indeed very lonely. Then the others said something like "It's okay, Takako. You're not alone. We will follow and always be beside you. Because we're your friends." And then they started to recite that poem like usual, ending with "The answer is in the blowing wind". Too bad my Japanese is not good enough to understand Takako's monologue after that, that was the part I really want to know. Anyway, I hope that helps. And I'm happy that you loved this drama as well! ^^
What can I say, honestly, this movie was cute but... forgettable. It had all those eye-candy main characters with decent acting and potential chemistry along with nice cinematography, but the weakness of it is the whole plot was too rushed and felt way too forced and unrealistic. Not sure how popular the manga is in Japan but hopefully this movie has at least boosted a few tons of sales for the manga because otherwise this movie truly is a waste.
seriously why is it that this drama has not been picked up yet? just look at the genres, the director, the original manga and THE CAST. what's not clicking???
Episode 6: I don’t understand Yuri. I find it hard to believe her kindness. I mean, she basically gave her boyfriend a makeover and now he’s going to be an idol and fooling around with other girls and she knows it. And she found out her useless friends had been sending flirty messages to her boyfriend but she forgives them and stays friends with them. She broke up with her bf but agreed to get back to him when the idol contest is over. I mean, she forgives everything and anything. but when she found out Kairi just crushed her ideal “true love”, it’s something unforgivable. Really? to be THIS pure and naive? it’s just not believable. Can’t wait to see what Kairi’s gonna do next though, she’s twisted and manipulative but at least she’s the most rational one in this drama.
Oh..this is rare...this just aired on July 11 and we have it already subbed :)...Jdramas are catching up! ^-^And…
as far as i know, it's fast because it's not fansubs. apparently they got the subs from VIU, an Asian streaming service. let's hope they'll keep providing english subs for J-dramas like this, it's really convenient.
One more thing. This drama literally said that artists don’t have to be suffering to create masterpieces, they can do that when they’re happy and in love too, and I’m so here for it.
(Yes, it’s been 18 days since my last comment below and i’m still not over this drama)
Can you imagine being in the industry for over 30 years and still frequently getting cast in romance projects with young male leads? That beauty, that power!!
sorry i have to list my thoughts down bc i’ve just finished this drama and my mind is a mess rn.
1. They... really made it to the end of the drama without revealing his name, none of the characters even called his name once, and they even got married, it was just so unbelievable lmao. But I can see the intention of doing that. They had mentioned the reason for that earlier in the drama, which was because they didn’t want any connection or something like that. But somewhere along the way that reason slowly changed. Until the very last moment, they still kept his name a secret. Why? I like to think it’s a way to emphasize his existence. He will be remembered forever even if he didn’t have a name. And with that his desire is fulfilled.
2. That psychic guy was pretty cool, I wanted to see more of him. Also, am I the only one thought that he was the thieft in the last episode? I mean, he rode a bike... and he probably saw the guy’s wish to die. It kinda makes sense, right?
3. I rarely dislike any fictional characters but man, that ex-husband... the actor really did a fucking good job making him unlikable. He was so annoying that I didn’t even want to read the subs whenever he talked or yelled, and he sure yelled a lot.
4. 2 years after this drama, Nakayama Miho starred in another age-gap dramas, both older women - younger man relationships and both ended with her sitting by the beach smiling. Yes, I’m talking about Kenja no Ai. She actually did a lot of age-gap themed dramas and movies, I’m not complaining though, with that youthful beauty of her, can you imagine being in the industry for 30 years and still frequently getting cast in romance projects with young male leads? That power..... Anyway, I’ve watched most of those movies and dramas and they’re all good ones, she’s amazing.
Well that’s all. This was no ordinary drama. 8/10.
