Honestly, it’s just not that exciting. There’s no romance, no Bromance, no big plot twist, no ah hah moment,…
"... sitting in front of a professor waiting for him to get to the point" - hahaha! I remember those days.
Apparently they shifted the story a bit, from the story of Huirou to the story of the Emperor. Having said that, the latest episodes do come back to Huirou like you said, and that's the really tragic part.
Overall, I still love this drama. It's so beautiful and authentic.
I was excited to start this one but I have seen quite a few people who either dropped it or gave it a rather low…
This drama, though adapted from a novel, feels like a documentary of Emperor Renzong and Empress Cao. There are no "fancy" actions, no "actual" antagonists, no "exciting" plots. It's just being told as how history is. In fact I love this drama. It's hard to come by such dramas and I can see why - not many people appreciate it. So if you're a history buff and appreciate historical Chinese culture, you may like this drama. If you're expecting action and plots, you may be disappointed.
Can someone recommend Chinese historical or wuxia drama?I watched Nirvana in Fire and will be watching Joy of…
I'm recommending some recent ones: 1. The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty 2. Under the Power 3. Ancient Detective Joy of Life is very good. Should start watching the season 1 now. Otherwise you'd have to wait for 5 years for all the other seasons to come out.
I am actually enjoying the drama so far (currently at ep 38 or so), it feels very slice of life so if you are…
"she was always taught that women should take care of the household and had no need for a good education." - but doesn't the Empress always feel that girls should be more empowered therefore education and exposure to the world are very important?
This is such a beautiful and sad story. My heart aches .....
I don't know how they write the Huirou character in the novel and in the drama, but according to historical record, she died tragically at 33 and Huaiji died soon after, heartbroken. I want to cry ....
IMO, the best parts of the show are the debates on policy and literary theory, but most people are only interested…
Yes, one has to be super patient with this drama. There're no actions as such that drama viewers normally acquaint with, no actual antagonists, no real plots that give the aha moments, etc. Despite all these, I love this drama for its portrayal of the great 8 (not sure if there're 8 of them here), beautiful ci written by them, and sung. Makes me feel as if I was from that era.
Good lord, the adult princess is so obnoxious! She is an self-entitled, self-centered, judgmental woman. She doesn't…
I was a teenager once, and I wasn't as smart as you guys are. I chose poorly, thinking only about love, which in retrospect I knew nothing about. So I can empathize with Huirou; she's like the millions runaway girls in today's world when their boyfriends are being banished by their parents.

She's actually the one who has the best personality. She's kind, thoughtful, and upstanding, that's why Huaiji loves her so much. Imagine if you're not allowed to love the one that you love very much but forced to marry someone you don't love at all, how would you feel? She's heart broken, feeling hopeless and helpless. If not for the encouragement from Huaiji, she has no will to live at all. It's really very tragic. I think she dies young too, probably due to unhappiness after her marriage. It's so sad. Life was harsh.
i kind of hate that about this show. it's pretty much saying the only reason they're compatible despite their…
What you say make so much sense. Yes, a younger man falls in love with an older woman normally it's because he's attracted to her maturity - she doesn't behave like a girl his age and she's not naive. But for this drama, the FL is so immature emotionally whereas the ML is the more mature one, hence balances out the overall relationship.
I just finished watching the sleuth of ming dynasty, and when i come back here, i couldn't help comparing with…
I'm watching this because I like Arthur Chen though he didn't act very well the last time. This time, he's matured a lot, but still his acting confuses me. The dialogues in this drama is so childish and lack substance. I guess the high rating is because of Arthur Chen's fans?
