This is through and through a wuxia drama like the old days. Some scenes and dialogues are so funny! The characters' names are hilarious: Jian Buzhi, Zhao Wohuan, Sima Dang XD

You're quite right about the relationship, it's frustrating. It's really painful to see a character that we love not getting what she deserves, and the Emperor can get away and indulge in his shenanigans.
not to write an essay about cao danshu but i think what hurts me the most about her is that she represents the…
Had the Chinese culture permitted, Cao Danshu could have been the Emperor herself. Strong, smart, upstanding, fair, kind, magnanimous. Love her in her armor outfit. Reminds me of Mulan. Who needs a male Emperor?
Having said that, it is precisely this reason that the Emperor feels threatened. Men usually prefer wives who are not smarter than themselves so that they can brag to the wives to boost their own egos. Long live girls' power! :)

I think initially without seeing the Empress face to face, the Emperor thought she was ugly through some misunderstanding rumors. Then when he saw her, he did fall for her, but she was so business-like that pushed him off; she liked him but wanted him to make the first move to show that she's not like other concubines trying to 'seduce' the Emperor. He, on the other hand, respected the Empress a lot and thought she was forced into the marriage and didn't want to impose on her, so he waited for her to warm up to him. Repeatedly he mentioned to his palace attendant that he didn't want to force himself on the Empress. After sometime, he saw how the Empress conducted the inner palace business efficiently and effectively, she reminded him of the Dowager Empress. I think that's the time he began to move away from her.
It's so frustrating to see every time when either wanted to express his/her love and admiration for the other, something happened and distracted them. Only if they were more open to each other, maybe they would have had a much happier and fulfilled life together. I'm so sad for the Empress.
1. Why the empress can't give a birth to royal son/daughter?2. Zhang Guifei is powerful than Empress? Will she…
1. No sex yet, so no baby XD 2. I'm up to Ep.16. Haven't seen much of Zhang yet, and don't know how she would over power the Empress unless the Emperor lets her :(
Finished ep 15. Some thoughts on ep 9-15 (contains some minor spoilers):1. Around ep 9-10, editing became less…
Talking about informality, I also notice how the Empress's maidservant Huan-Er addresses her. Until today, she still calls the Empress 'gu niang' 姑娘 (as equal in status?) instead of 'xiao jie' 小姐 as most normal non-regal families would.
