Her entire life's work had gone to waste with FWD's death and in her mind Susu had brought even more disgrace to the defunct Fei family.
Susu's demise is meant to show the horrific outcomes of feudalistic marriages even in rich educated households i.e. you cannot divorce or remarry, you have to stay a virtuous widow your whole life even if your husband dies early and the elder women in your family will impose those rules on younger women since they were bound to strict rules too. Ultimately the show has a pro-Communist slant so it's meant to show how the free-thinking young Chinese like Wendian, Xiuxiu, Susu wanted to usher in a non-feudalistic China but some were forced to sacrifice their lives due to war or feudalism even if they fought against it.
