also, finally someone who recognizes the importance of the other characters! people on here often get too caught up in the romance and ignore the deeper aspects of the story that are just as, if not more, important as love. (i remember someone here once said cang xuan's character is useless, can you believe that 💀) despite not being in official romantic relationships with xiao yao, xiang liu and cang xuan actively took steps to ensure her safety even at the cost of sacrificing their interests. meanwhile, jing may be a sweet and non-abusive boyfriend but he can't take action and resolve problems for shit which hurts xiao yao just as much. totally agree with those paragraphs you wrote. it's also why i feel like jing's character is a plot device, specifically curated for xiao yao to get the lifetime companion she wanted.

at first, i wondered how they'd be able to redeem wei zhao and make them fall in love with each other, but this is one story where you just have to trust the process. they really made the transition from enemies to lovers look so seamless that i even forgot how toxic their relationship was at the start LOL. it's a very slow burn once they got together, they were a beautiful couple. no need for physical skinship like hugs and kisses; the emotions and care for each other are right there.

i feel so sad about an cheng, who was one of the lonely pei yan’s closest friends, and wei zhao, who couldn’t be with the person he loved forever. THE WAY HE DID A MARRIAGE CEREMONY TO JIANG CI BEFORE HE LEFTTT and jiang ci did it later also oh these two 💔

now, what i didn't like:

the major one is that there's a lot of political talk, which is unfortunately not my forte (esp in chinese costume dramas). i knew beforehand that LON would be political heavy but i didn't think it'd be *that* much. all that jargon kept going inside one ear and out the other so i had to read episode recaps to get the gist of it all 😅 (btw this isn't an issue with the drama itself; it's just my personal preference)

i admit being disappointed by some of the characters' actions, like jiangci's shifu, yang shuang qiao. the buildup to her death made her strong character look stupid. why would you go trust someone like rong yudie?? i thought she'd have something up her sleeve when she agreed to partner with yudie, like, plot twist! i’m actually on wei zhao’s side. or none; i’m gonna leave this place with jiang ci on my own just as i have said before. but alas…. :-) it felt like the writers killed some people just to add gasoline to the fire and end a plot (get rid of rong yudie), a very abused trope.

lastly, this is a minor issue, but i wish the camera people or editors wouldn't move the camera so much. a notable example is the final ep where wei zhao is on the ground, basically bidding his goodbyes. i get it, the camera is shaking to portray the feeling of the building burning and crumbling down. but a lower quality cgi + shaky camerawork do not go well together; it just makes the cgi look even more fake and therefore distracting to watch when the scene is supposed to be emotional and heartbreaking.

overall though, i think love of nirvana is worth watching. our leads jiang ci, wei zhao, and pei yan are strong, and even several of the side characters are likeable.

i saw some snippets of her and you're right; she's not awful but she kinda lacks that "bite." i find that many actors struggle in that aspect LOL. it's not necessarily a huge deal if the script/character doesn't demand strong acting skills to be considered watchable. however, when paired alongside a skilled actor who can completely immerse himself in the role and portray layered emotions like tan jianci, the difference in acting ability become much more noticeable and thus can make the show off-putting to watch. that's my biggest concern 🥲
