I sensed something was off the moment I checked the Douban rating. I mean, even Wu Lei's school project GOTAO which was produced by Beijing Academy student production has a 7.4 on MDL, if I recall correctly, so this rating here just doesn't make sense! Is there some sort of fan war happening or what? 🤔
It was one of the most anticipated dramas this year, and it looks like it flopped!
Could someone summarize what went wrong? Is it because of the script/plot? I'm curious to know the main reason because it makes no sense! This is a high-budget drama with a stacked cast. If the script is bad, for instance, why did Yang Mi accept it?!!

This seems suspicious because the drama has a 5.6 rating on Douban. 🤔 Usually, dramas with such rating on Douban have a solid 8 on MDL, so what the hell is going on here?

Unfortunately, that may not be possible. One movie starring him, "Dwelling by the West Lake," was already released this year, and another, "Decent Things," is coming up next. Additionally, two new movies were officially announced today: "Dongji Island" and "The Decisive Moment." If the secret project he was working on is "Dongji Island" (or another movie), then next year may be the second time without a drama starring Wu Lei since his debut 18 years ago (the first was in 2019 when he had two movies, but at least back then he had dramas announced, which is not the case now). Unless he somehow picks up one of those modern romance dramas that takes three months to film at the end of this year and the drama gets greenlit quickly, the problem is that I personally don't think he will do that... sheesh.
Season 2 was amazing, but I have one single problem with it: Ye Ling Er! I'm really frustrated with her character—what the hell was that? At this point, they should just kill her off in the next season. I know some people were dissatisfied with the actress change when the cast was announced, but I wasn't too upset because I've seen several dramas starring Gina Jin and know how good she is. But, oh dear, her scenes were painful to watch...
She is young and talented ❤️ Surely, the future is bright for her. Hopefully, we will see another collaboration with Wu Lei because their chemistry was out of this world.

I don't think that's true, considering she just had a supporting role in "Joy of Life 2," which was released last month! If she had been canceled, she would have been edited out or replaced by another actress.

To be fair, the rating on MDL shouldn't determine whether you watch a drama or not. Douban would be more accurate. For example, The Knockout has an 8.2 rating on MDL and isn't very popular on this site, but on Douban, it has an 8.5 and was actually the most popular drama last year, breaking countless records. You may say "but it's not a big difference between 8.2 and 8.5," but wait until you hear the ratings of AASOL and HL there: they have 6.5 and 6.7 respectively. This is considered a decent rating for that genre of dramas (many other dramas have 5, 4, or even 3).
Meet Yourself, which I believe is the best C-Drama of 2023 (and already got that award from different award ceremonies including the SDA : a South Korean award ceremony) has an 8.9 on MDL and an 8.7 on Douban, so, Douban for me makes more more sense.
