I kind of agree but I definitely understand why they didn't get nominated individually, as both families worked…
I'll take a look in a bit!

Hshs I do, I have super niche tastes >< I only watched Parasite for an article tbh (as much as I wanted to watch it, it wasn't as much as 27 other things, you know?). But I definitely need to take some time to focus more on things like Parasite more :')

BR: HitBR2: Miss
Fair enough; I just think its pretty decent for the way it was a new film rather than the first film with new characters which is pretty common for the genre, so I think it's somewhat stand out in that aspect

Battle Royal is iconic no doubt, a miss would't get a remake or inspire other creators to create something similar,…
I 100% agree. I think the reason I enjoyed things like Belko and HG was because I saw them before this (they're good films for what they are but it's definitely hard to appreciate their individual charms after seeing this one)
I've seen a lot of gore films and honestly, BR is the outlier for me; they really put everything together to make sure piece everything together. It was just pure art

I loved the first movie, your article is convincing me to watch the sequel...I have the book, which is one of…
Definitely be prepared that it's very plot heavy and doesn't surround the royale ^^

I'm really going to have to get a copy of the book, everyone's recommending it. I'm planning to read all the mangas as well, would you like me to tell you if the rest of the mangas are okay/not okay to read?

good things must be shared. you always flatter me like that. you're amazing.
I always tell people this. Sometimes it does more damage to "stand up and rush to the solution". And 'suffering' isn't weak either. Sometimes we have to suffer to fully learn what we need to to prevent it again in the future, especially with things like MH.

Geh, can’t find your Twitter url!
Lee Sun Kyun was pretty amazing to be honest, (and not gonna lie, my eyes did zoom in on him once or twice op-). Definitely want to have a closer look at him.

I agree, I’d probably give one to Woo Shik as well; both of the kids did amazingly, and I’d say for main role, if someone had to pick, it might just be between those two.

Not to my knowledge! Hshs, they might have been in something else I watched without realising :’)
I’ll keep an eye and add them to my PTW!!! They are all v talented actors and I’m curious to see more

The second one isn't 100% coherent with the legend but it's just as good! Really took me by surprise (I don't…
I really enjoyed it! It's not quite the same as urban legend horror, but it was still understandable, the emotions and actions of the characters were understandable and realistic (extreme, but realistic). I'd definitely say give it a go

Fair enough! I often ask this question bc sometimes people do mistake they don't deserve an award bc I didn't relate to this *inherently Korean thing* so it's a good conversation point

Even the strongest people cry sometimes, and tbh, I (personally) think that when it shows people being "weak" that is strong. It takes a lot to admit it's wrong, especially to other people and crying in front of other people, etc. More often than not, the strong people who cry are often the ones who know that crying doesn't mean they're weak and just need to let emotions flow, imo.

But even saying that, we *all* get knocked down. Even just sitting up to wipe the tears and have a look around is strong; sometimes it's not getting back up, sometimes it's staying in the same place to take time to fully understand the situation which is as strong as getting up straight away.

I do too! I'm pretty hopeful for them, so I should go into it with a better mindset so I don't have an already 4/10 mindset.
I 100% agree. If that's how you see a strong female, not my business, but for me, it really doesn't click at all. Strong females that are 100% strong without the pain/downfall of others are my favourite, so this one seems like a clear choice for me to give a try

I think you did very well! It comes across as you're a fan, but not like "omg watch this oppa 10/10 <3". It comes across as "I'm a fan but professionally I'm going to tell you why I like this" (Idk about others, but I definitely prefer this one because it feels more coherent).
I honestly don't have much, if any, knowledge on this topic (I think I've seen one cross dressing film and that was one scene for a con... hshs) so I will take your word for it! By the sounds of it, these do sound like proper "strong female lead". I find some dramas have a bad habit of "strong female lead" means "i hate all men until I fall for one and this woman is more successful than me so I'm going to just b*tch about her" which is why I don't actually watch many dramas -- but your descriptions here definitely have me intrigued. Going to have to add this one to my PTW list for after the first article you did as well!

I might definitely have to check this one out now and see why this one is so famous with females my age [eyes emoji]
kjdhfkd please i LOVE your work, you always have the right amount of serious vs comedic that's just *chefs kiss*

But I pose the question, could you not relate to them because of the culture differences? Was it just difference from the characters as a whole or does that also play a part?

That's true, but then if you had to pick ONE, who would you go for? I'd personally go for Park So Dam. Her role was absolutely perfect and after seeing her in a few other things, her acting is 100% solid in everything she does. I haven't seen anything the others have been in I don't think so that's where mine comes from.
I know they've won some cast awards at much smaller awards and some in SK as well, but it does make me a little sad that none of them are getting "recognition", for a lack of better wording, for their roles.

Honestly, the only Oscar film this year I've seen in Parasite; it's going to be a nice catch up this year to have of all the tops from last year and this year (plus I'm trying to do the Oscar Highlights on IMDb in order from 2005-2020 so ><)

I don't remember when I watched Battle Royale for the first time, but probably around 8 years ago I believe (I…
I am 100% the same with my first J-movie/J-horror. As I’m older now I see how cringy and out of it mine was (https://kisskh.at/2434-tokyo-gore-police – still can’t believe my dad willingly brought this for me from the Blockbuster bargain bin xD I was like, 5?) and I still rewatch it a ton :’)
I’m also the same, there’s very few films I willingly rewatch – usually, I purposely forget a film to watch it again in a few years, but there are very few I willingly put back on straight away within a few months. It’s always a special film when you can do that without needing to forget the minor details.
Battle Royale seems to be this film for a lot of people; seems to have been a lot of people’s first, and it’s warming my heart seeing all these lil stories!
Where did you get the novel? Was it online, via a store, etc? I’ve been meaning to read it and the mangas, but I’m not sure where to go around it!

Hshs, yes. I watched Requiem for this and I don’t think I’ll be watching it again. I didn’t watch this series too long ago, only in December, and I can’t remember much past the initial students getting to the beach part of Requiem. Definitely won’t be going to pick it up again but might buy the DVD just so I don’t twitch at “missing” a film in my collection. Definitely not the best film ever, but it has some good factors so I can’t quite say it’s a miss for people who enjoyed the plot.
I agree! It’s already become part of my straight recommendation list, especially for newbies to the genre. I didn’t quite get to experience that myself; I watched this in my early 20s so a part of the film was definitely lost to me; I can’t imagine what it must be like to sit and watch this at the same age as the characters. It must be really harrowing to sit and watch it through like that.
Same here! Everyone’s stories on this article are making me want to rewatch it and I’m already about 20 media deep in a PTW for my articles :’) Definitely have to get round to a rewatch soon enough.

I remember buying the DVD in this random Asian movie store in the mall in high school. I always wanted to watch…
Ahhh I remember buying them from the "thrown out on sale" bargain bin in Blockbusters :') Tokyo Gore Police was my first hshs. I wonder how many people bought their first from a bargain bin, market, mall, etc.
BR is absolutely brilliant, even thinking back on it now takes my breath away.
Requiem is a hard one - most people hate it, I didn't fully clarify in my article, but I enjoyed it more for the genuine continuation of the plot and it being a different film; it wasn't something like Death Bell that just did the same plot with different characters. For most people though, it's more of a "checklist" film, just to tick it off and finish the series.
