Ah, Battle Royale. This movie was a hit for me. I don't think I was that big of a fan of Requiem though.
Requiem intrigues me as a decent sequel that didn't just rerun the first films plot which is why I gave it points - definitely only one to watch for the plot continuation or to tick it off a collection seen series. BR is just a master piece though, an utter masterpiece.
It's so well deserving, but it does make me sad how all of the cast did absolutely amazing yet they don't seem to have got any acting nominations across the current award sets; they're well deserving of one
God, mine was about that long ago almost and that's a scary thought xD It's absolutely beautiful even today and…
Whoomph, there it is. Every time. I'll probably watch it for an article in the future, but here's hoping this is the one that breaks the western remake stereotypes tbh
i watched this movie back in 2011/2012, right before i got into asian dramas or saw the hunger games (lol) and…
Oh wow, really??? I can't imagine what it must have been like to see this when you're the age of the characters, that must be really unnerving and horrifying. The actors did so well, honestly, they struck me very hard watching this in my 20s. Ahh, Masanobu Ando, the bad boy hshs. I can relate to that one ><
Hshs I hope you enjoy it! I do admit, it's not as good as the first at all; I like it because it honestly did something different in the sequel where as a lot of franchises like this would usually just have a remake of the first and pass it off as a sequel whilst adding nothing new, that's why Requiem scored points for me.
i have rewatched battle royale many times and i still enjoy it but the sequel not as much but hearing there will…
I think they suck to us because we've seen the original so we know the content and such already; they do well bc people who don't watch originals, won't watch bc it's "too old" or won't read subs - usually - will go flock to see it because it's "brand new". Breaks my heart. We have *another* Western Grudge movie coming out this year as well... White cinema (UK, US, Hollywood, etc) just rips off everywhere else - they even took a notable Latin American legend to make some bad white movie of it (La Llorona), and it does my head in :')
BR is definitely ending up on my "to rewatch" list. There's just such this... almost magic about it that's so chilling and unnerving that it just... There's something about it. This film is one of those few magic ones.
According to an article a few years back, Battle Royale is one of the best 30 movies ever made to Quentin Tarantino…
Yep! I'm surprised it missed a place on "most iconic Japanese horror" officiated lists, this film is almost synonymous with Japanese movies, so it surprises me there as well. Definitely deserves a place
it was definitely a hit for me; i watched these two when i was young and I still remembered the chill that i got…
Reading these comments is so amazing; the fact you still remember the utter chill you got shows this really is such a good movie and holds over time; Fukusaka new exactly what he doing when making these. And it's even more chilling when you remember, they're not even asking the kids to - it's government decree. They *have* to whether they want to or not, it's. Unnerving 100%. Both has the same level of impact due to the slight change to the game (won't say without spoilers :')) but 100% the first definitely has the bigger chill factor to it.
I saw on letterbox and I was surprised by it. I thought they'd never do it.When I first saw BR i was obsessed…
I was as well, especially when I saw it was going to be directed by Fukasaku. With his guidance I'm sure the film will be good but it won't be the same in anyway and in most forms is going to be a wash down of the first film :/ Hshs that's brilliant!!! I love hearing how impactful this film was for so many people!
Which one??? Fujiwara is a stunning actor, and everything about this film was just brilliant. Fukasaku really took the cake with this one in all line ups of cast and crew.
It definitely is different. I'm not a "fan" perse, but I do appreciate how it strove to be different from the first one in many aspects - I've seen too many films just have a remake of the first film as a sequel and usually do so worse, so I appreciate and respect it went into a different direction.
I'm going to be doing the same, but I'll probably do a RRR article on it because I want an excuse to rewatch BR :')
i guess maybe 12 minutes will be fine so i can have an ending....
The ending is that it begins again but this time, he's listened to. The ending is that he's treated like a human, rather than strange because of his tics, or immediately viewed as a criminal ^^
A very interesting article. Unfortunately, Requiem killed me inside with both the plotline and Royale.
Thank you ^^ Going into the background of a series is always one of my favourite things tbh (a stage performance??? I'd have LOVED to see that) I feel like the only one on this site who has the "stomach" for it xD
This was an interesting article!! I actually discovered Battle Royale many years ago before I got interested in…
Ah, that's really awesome! It's cool to know how popular this was that even people outside of the community knew about it! Hshs, each to their own! If you watch any other battle royal type film, it's basically all the same as this so if you find a meager one, you can get a hint xD
I saw this movie like a decade ago (OMG!), one of the first Japanese movies I've seen and I recall how disturbing…
God, mine was about that long ago almost and that's a scary thought xD It's absolutely beautiful even today and honestly, it's just timeless, definitely deserving of it's place on Notable/Iconic Japanese Horrors. The remake makes me uneasy, with the original director, it is going to be good to a degree but there isn't really anything they can do to make it unique. It's probably just going to be the same film with a bunch of white kids and that makes me so sad
This is one my favorite Japanese films ever. I have re-watched it a few times, and often listen to the gorgeous…
Honestly, it's earned a solid place in my "higher-average faves (7-9/10 films)" before the film had even finished. The OST was absolutely stunning and I cannot *wait* till we have OST information on here so we can share the songs; I really hope that it encourages people to try and listen to more content from films like this. This and Crows Zero are the only OSTs I've gone out my way to track down and buy. 100% agree, even the political side of things - albeit, different political issues, but still.
Ooo if you read it any time soon, I'd be curious of hearing what you think of the novel!
You're more than welcome!!
(I have a soft spot for it >< It had a very good plot continuation that most sequels don't so I have to say, I'm a bit of a sucker for it, very rare to see a film series do something unique in the way this did rather than just a redo of the first film with different characters)
Was it? I haven't had a chance to get round to it yet, but now I'm curious!
Oooo thank you! I'll definitely get an order for it in soon and get to reading it! I'd be curious what you'd think about the film as a manga reader, if you're interested about watching it in the future
Thank you so much for writing this. I loved Battle Royale, so much that I even rewatched it (which is a rarity…
You're more than welcome! BR has a lot of user ratings but I'm surprised it doesn't have more for how popular it seems on the outside. Beautiful piece. I'm with you on that one; Requiem is more like a brief insight to the universe after the first film and isn't 'required' viewing. I think it's a nice touch to do something different for the second film but definitely isn't one that people need to see before they die. I don't remember much from the plot either other than the scene where they all go to the beach, but for viewing at the time, it was a good film; not terrible, not brilliant, but a good solid continuation.
This movie is a hit! Way better then Hunger Games, and a better story, I have Battle Royale 2 but have not seen…
100% I did enjoy Hunger Games, but I think I only did so because I saw it before BR. I would say Requiem isn't bad, more, different people are going to interpret it differently, and some people will go into it expecting a blood bath and getting more story driven plot more than a repeat of the first film (which I actually very much liked - it's all too common for sequels to just do a repeat of the first time with new characters). I'd say give it a go and decide for yourself!
BR is just a master piece though, an utter masterpiece.
