Such an awesome list! Thank you - off to dissapear in youtube land! These are perfect for the commutes to work.…
Thank you! You're more than welcome, I hope you enjoy these! There's so much talent in the short film industry now a days, there are so many true gems. I also have a shorts list on my profile with tons more (I add links once I've watched them) ^^
Thank you very much for such wonderful and helpful list. I will be using it.
You're very welcome! I also have a "Shorts" list on my profile including shorts from all countries on MDL and I update it whenever I watch some more ^^ I hope you can enjoy these as much as I did
I can't speak for others but for me, part of the appeal is he was one of the first Japanese directors I actually…
If it helps, my full review of Exte is here! (it's Letterboxd since I don't know how to link specific reviews on MDL ><: My ★★★★ review of Exte: Hair Extensions on Letterboxd https://boxd.it/U6kEV). I review as I watch to ensure I add in every detail and nuance and don't forget anything so that's my general feel for Exte.
Ooohhh I didn't know he did short films and I'm currently doing a short film challenge [eyes emoji] that's something I'm going to have to take a peek at. But definitely I agree with him being seen as a revenge horror director more so but his zany stuff is so good!! Tag sounds really promising so I hope he's got more of similar content than revenge horror (revenge is all good but sometimes it doesn't get original enough, you know?)
I'll definitely talk to the admins (I've got like 9 articles backed up already to write hshs) but as I work through his stuff I'll definitely at least consider it!! He's made his way into the "a possible favourite" list for sure with just two films so I don't think (well, I hope) I won't be disappointed!
Oh definitely. For me, a lot of Miikes charm IS nostalgic as I said, but if you focus, you can really see the love and respect he has for his script writers, the frames, horror as a whole (too many horror dirs tryna make a quick buck with no real appreciation for the genre) and the like! You can tell its his passion, even the films you can tell he just took because it was a job. Like with Sion and his more zany works! I hope you enjoy checking out more now you know a different point of view ^^
Agreed. I've seen First Love, it's not bad ... but not the best he's ever made.
Toksatsu is generally more live action things like power rangers and I believe mostly kids shows? If you go to idol x warriors and click the tag for toksatsu it'll show you generally what they're more like! I haven't seen any other than the 3 Miike has done myself ><
Definitely noting the rest of those down to push up my PTW list so I see them sooner.I think he likes playing…
Cut half my reply off oops, And I definitely agree with First Love, I'm just hoping this isn't one of those the west has hyped bc they haven't seen many Asian films so this is A+ to them, you know?
Cool article, I've only seen Audition, Ichi the Killer, 13 Assassins, Gozu, Crows Zero, Izo, Lesson of the Evil,…
Definitely noting the rest of those down to push up my PTW list so I see them sooner.
I think he likes playing with his audience; you get through a two hour gore fest expecting some sort of meaning and then it's just yep there's the sick bag have fun. It's almost refreshing to have a director who is happy to make content in this way without looking too far for a meaning and letting the audience decide if there was one or not whilst still showing his love and passion in the frames.
Agreed. I've seen First Love, it's not bad ... but not the best he's ever made.
Hmm does Jojo class as toksatsu? The LA as zany as it can be I would definitely consider more action than glittery (it's definitely not as in your fave as the anime) so I misunderstood heh ^^
I've only seen 4 and my fave is Blade of the Immortal (yes, I'm biased.) I got bored with Laplace's Witch.
Aren't we all biased when it comes to our fave directors and films? These are my top 8 favourites by him so I recommend trying the others if you haven't!! (Yes, I'm biased xD)
Agreed. I've seen First Love, it's not bad ... but not the best he's ever made.
Haha I'm not Conservative at all, Ichi is actually my second favourite film I've seen out of 1040, xD. Will definitely give this a try now [eyes emoji]
Oooo that sounds really cool! There's more like power rangers stuff as well that's classed as toksatsu and less glittery and cute girls! The same people who do Idol x Warrior have a few more suited towards "little boys" rather than "little girls" (quotes to make it clearer what I'm saying but boys and girls can watch what they want and their shows should not be gendered!). But I am curious on if you watch one of Miike's glittery things, how you feel, what you think etc. Because for sure Idol x Warriors actually took me by surprise and I love the show now, I listen to the groups on Spotify XD
Agreed. I've seen First Love, it's not bad ... but not the best he's ever made.
Oooo I am very intrigued by this summary. I can't wait for subs to come out, I'll be on it within the first hour!
I agree with audition! Whilst it was somewhat boring and blasé for me going through the film that one scene turned it into a masterpiece. Miike's limits knows no bounds, that one scene turned the entire movie on its head. I have yet to watch visitor q, but it is definitely moving up my PTW very quickly!
I have to confess I do quite like his toksatsu series! I decided to watch it just because and they're actually quite fun and nostalgic. The Japanese is also really simple so it has actually helped enhance my vocab and it's been a great way for me and my anime loving baby cousin to sit and bond! They're strange coming from him and it still feels very surreal they ARE his works, but enjoyable for me all the same. Keeping us on our toes is definitely something he knows how to do. I love the way a new film gets announced and the horror and action fans end up trying to guess who's being fed this time xD
I've only watched 5 Miike films so far, but my favorite is Gozu.
I'm definitely excited to give that one a try! He's very good with yakuza; I wouldn't be surprised if he's spent time with them to enhance his films. What are the others you've seen?
Great article. I guess I can watch the glitter and guns recommendations, since I most definitely cannot watch…
I hope you enjoy them!! Miike is really good with ghosts as well so I'd recommend his non gore horrors as well! He's extremely diverse, and has many sides so I hope you can find something you like from him!
Agreed. I've seen First Love, it's not bad ... but not the best he's ever made.
I'm expecting a 7-8/10 more than something record breaking to be totally honest; with Japanese films, high regard in the West - as amazing as it is - doesn't always mean much for people who consume the content often
I can't speak for others but for me, part of the appeal is he was one of the first Japanese directors I actually…
I totally agree with you to be honest. A lot of Miikes work is translating a novel or tome to the big screen which is fine but usually the message is lost and found in the original source, or he just wants to make a movie. Sometimes for the sake of it, sometimes I feel he just takes a movie he's offered based on the content of his past movies and I feel like some he just takes to fund movies he wants to make.
I adore special effects so for me, I do love that a lot of Miikes are gore. You can see most of the detailing in the work and how much he wants it present in his films which is something i can appreciate very much as someone who has studied it. He very much valued his SFX crews which isn't something that's inherently common in horror or movies as a whole (barring things like scifi, fantasy etc, but even then you can see in some that they don't really care about the effects of the artists they just Needed them)
Haha each to their own! Exte is very weird like it's a proper trashy cringey horror but at the same time he approaches it with such skill, for me and a lot of avid horror fans (like 1k movies watched and 60+% is horror type of avid) really enjoyed it. But curse films are very hit and miss and other than the curse and object itself I wouldn't say its inherently original. Exte is a very good first film for people discovering Sono I think, but from clips I've seen I think those who found him before seeing it might not enjoy it too much.
I am definitely looking into Sono! After seeing Exte and Suicide Club I'm very intrigued by him. I'm doing an article on The Chasing World series which has made me aware of Tag and I have to watch it for the piece but I am very much looking forward to it. I might end up doing a fan guide to him as well, he's a very curious man who somehow mixes bizarre and horror very well with a grace I haven't seen from any other director yet.
But yeah Miikes violence is definitely more for entertainment, like a good slasher film. I do like directors to be more finessed with their gore to a degree but I feel, as a gore horror fan, Miike has that love for it in his work and that shines through so for an entertainment piece for me it's done on a decent level. I am very curious to look into Sono's though, the man has definitely captured my attention.
He's the definition of hit or miss. Some of his movies are my favorites but some of them are just straight garbage…
I'd agree to a point. I feel like they get offered films based on type like a type cast of an actor sometimes and definitely, some of Mikkes films are a complete miss. I wouldn't quite say Sion and Miike are similar. They both have obscene gore but Miike does it more to have content like that whereas Sion does so to make the audience feel, provoke them and convey a message. I wouldn't say a lot of Miikes do that inherently; the pondering of the audience tends to be on the audiences part rather than something Miike wanted. First Love looks amazing, it's definitely my top anticipated for 2000!

And haha that's fair enough, it's not for everyone

I am as well, it looks so good and its been an absolute hit with the West! Something pretty promising for a subbed film
