This needs to be answered by someone who has read the whole novel. As far my knowledge, he was just bored and decided to have a trip to mortal realm as a mortal with thorough process of going through river of forgetfullness etc. But since he was an ancient god his god knowledge was intact even in his mortal avatar. Meeting ShenLi in the mortal realm was a mere coincidence. He is playing dumb in order to make SL let go of whatever she is holding on. He is yet to realize his love for her.
