In the novel, he never officially proposed to her. He announced it to the papparazzi that she's his fiance, bc if he introduced her as gf then the world wouldn't take her and their relationship seriously. They would just think it's another fling of his. He never got down to his knees to propose. If I rmb correctly (I most certainly don't haha), they kissed a lot but it's almost never public bc JX wanted to keep their relationship a secret. So when they broke up no one knew. They would kiss in private like his house, her house, in the car, maybe in his office. So from the reuters, it's hard to see bc we only see reuters from when they film publicly.

I saw the Reuters and I do admit I can see onscreen chemistry. They look pretty compatible, perhaps it’s because they are both Babyface

They get bragging rights. If they are first string it means they are credited first and are THE main character. It also places you in what kind of position in the whole drama/production. Their fans get bragging right too. If the drama does well, it’ll be credited to the first string more. It’s the same as Hollywood dramas, you wouldn’t see Brad Pitt’s name second in the credits list
