Awesome article! I always felt the colors change when Nak mon appeared in scene, and the whole mirroring thing. But I never realised how often na moo was appearing with trees. They truly played with the visual aspect and words.

So it is not just me who had problems with the ravished by horse scene ?? Don’t get me wrong I love the show.. and i love por date more.. he is better than 99% of the Mls out there. But that one particular scene sort of irks me, even if he was just teasing her. And he never really apologised. One could argue that it was really true in 16th century patriarchy but por date was supposed to be a sweetheart!

Rewatching it for the umpteenth time - a drama that sexy-sad, this is it.
You can see how scared Yi Chen is. You can see it in his eyes and his anger how he fears losing Mo Sheng again - scared that she’ll vanish again and he won’t be able to find her. The reason he is keeping his distance even though they are married is also because of this. It is not because he is angry or can’t forgive her, he is just scared that if he gets too used to the happiness, it will get taken away from him. He is so scared to love her but yet, he cannot risk to lose her.
And it hurts when he asks her if she knew what pain was. Because she does. Mo sheng has suffered more. She was innocent and naive, but cheerful. She believed that Yi Chen was a serious person who thinks before speaking. Never would she have imagined when they were young that he could be impulsive too. When he said that he didn’t want to see her, she believed him. Because that is how Yi Chen was. Also, Yi chen should know that Mo sheng is the only person who could love him the way he was. When he refused to share his number, she did not get angry. Even after what Yimei said about how YiChen has not accepted her, she was sad but she still went to find Yi Chen only to be told she was hated. 7 years later, she has lost her cheerfulness. She mostly has her head down. She has went through so much in US, and she is still scared that she will anger Yi Chen, so she speaks less. She walks on eggshells so that she is not hated. She is scared he will get tired of her and tell her to leave.
Both of them are in so much pain. Both are so scared to love to their fullest. Though I feel Yi Chen should listen to her past, but I get him as well - he doesn’t want to listen about another man being close to her.
This drama is not perfect. But I find it really special. The pain in their acting and the amazing OST brings out feelings that I don’t want to feel. More than that, I feel happy they got a second chance to mend things - because not all of us get that. Some of us just end up being hated till the bitter end.

This is relationship done right. Kwang soo - Tae sub are my second favourite couple now. For people who do not like skinship in BL, this is your drama. There wasn’t a single kiss, or a hug that lasted more than 5 seconds, but yet these two broke my heart and mended it better than anyone else.
The pain of not being able to say out loud that you love someone and the fear of hurting your loved ones in the process of doing so - the drama captured it perfectly. Unlike Thai BLs, this showed a real world, very much similar to mine. They could not tell anyone that they are gay. The scene where they are thrown out of the taxi and called disgusting, and yet they smiled because they knew they could not change it broke my heart. Every time someone looked down upon them was so heart wrenching. Yet they stuck to each other. Tae Sub was more scared of how he was being perceived than Kwang Soo, but he loved him as much. He was not that scared of how the world will see them, but more about if they attack him and they have to break apart.. At times, I felt it would be better if he could console Kyung Soo better, but every one is different. But I loved how Tae Sub’s family stood by him. If we don’t stand by him, who will. He has always been through a lot, why should we add to it? Shouldn’t home be a place you can be yourself? I love you guys! Even Grandma. So mature.
Second best part of the show was Tae Sub’s Mom - the best Mom in dramaland. She fought for him and stood by him, even though he wasn’t her real son. She was the best character of this show. I loved how they showed her strong and yet human. Also, though I disliked the youngest uncle, I liked how he stood up to Kwang soo’s mom to let them be despite being against it.

It was not a perfect drama. I skipped a lot. But I loved the parents and KS-TS. Both the couples were relationship goals.

I am a skinship shippet too. If there is no chemistry, you lose a point in my ratings. This one has literally no skinship.. but for Korea to have a gay couple in a family drama in 2010.. that’s a big deal. Japan is progressive, so is Taiwan. Korea is traditional while China is just opression!

My pleasure. I am on ep 30 and I am not bored. Well the skinship is zero, so you can call it a censored BL. But the emotions are really raw. Coming from a conservative society, i find it relatable.

It’s an old family drama with lot of episode.. so it falls off the radar. And it’s a big family, so there is some family drama and character development till ep 15. But then it picks up. How each’s family reacts to the coming out.. i am on ep 27 so far.. but i really cried.

Yes, I am from India and though my generation is okay with it, the older generation still treat is taboo. But here they don’t even agree to marriage into another religion, so discrimination is sort of a norm. We're taking baby steps.
