This one has everything I love about Chinese period dramas

The main couple embodies both the "Wattpad bad boy" toxic dynamic and the "stealing glimpses of your high school crush" butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling.

Both of the leads are toxic, scheming their own games, neither radiating sincerity at first. The goodness in their layered characters appears gradually. The ML is an actual red flag, but only during his mental episodes. This adds an exciting layer to their relationship, as we get the thrill of a bad boy romance minus the guilt, since he’s not himself when he’s being a monster. But then again, maybe he’s just unleashing his true, unrestrained self, only other times he’s holding back.

The male lead’s innocent crush—secretly studying her face, stealing shy glances, making lame excuses just to be around her—absolutely heart-fluttering. These lighthearted, fun moments gradually evolve into a deep, passionate love over time. The transition was seamless, and how they embraced their feelings and built trust between each other happened at the perfect pace.
The drama explores many themes: palace politics, revenge, toxic relationships, and fluffy romance, with each arc being captivating and well-balanced. Definitely a must watch and became my favorite cdrama so far!
