I'm not sure about the specific case with cheng lei, but it's usually either: he had no time to dub himself, or he has some kind of dialect that native viewers would notice. for international viewers it is a little disappointing to see actors get dubbed, but there's usually a valid reason for it

I just gave it a watch and, honestly, I mostly have the same opinions as her. I thought it was a pretty fair review for her standards. of course personal interest in a drama is subjective, but she mentioned some really objective facts about the shortcomings. specifically, the screenwriters took out the main plot point from the novel (resurrection) and did not properly adjust the other elements to better suit the changes in the adaptation. the result is very messy 😅

however, if you're enjoying the drama yourself, there's no reason to worry about the opinions of others :) it's also perfectly okay to acknowledge the flaws something has while still enjoying it!

you wrote exactly what I was thinking haha. another aspect that bothers me is Xiao Jue not recognizing He Yan's mannerisms, voice, abilities, etc. it seems that they've been separated for some time (the backstory in here was quite choppy & rushed so who knows really), so maybe that's the logic there, but idk! doesn't work for me. just trying to turn my brain off instead 😆

I'm really liking this one! the cinematography is also beautiful, there have been some really amazing shots in this drama.

it definitely seems ridiculous to us now, but you've gotta keep in mind this drama is set in the early 2000s when many people had a shallow & ignorant understanding of hiv/aids. there are also cultural differences that we cannot properly grasp as foreigners watching the drama.

happy ending! so far the drama is mostly following the novel with some minor changes, but removing the nsfw elements and toning down chi cheng's character.. like a loot, he's really crazy in the novel. so there will definitely be some angst in the drama, but they resolve it 🙏

you can really tell this drama was rushed, there are so many weird editing mistakes that could have been prevented with more time :(

oh for sure, I agree. they are focusing on quantity over quality. I think I've just especially noticed it with iQiyi because they've been so insistent on making these big budget xianxia dramas. seems like they're still trying to emulate the LBFAD success, but they can't quite figure out why that drama worked and why their other ones don't 😩

agreeing with this. iQiyi idol xianxia costume dramas have simply not been up to par in recent years, so people have lost interest in watching them 😅 I think it started in 2023 with Love You Seven Times, since that was a high budget project with lots of promotion, but it was just.. very mediocre. and then Fox Spirit Matchmaker just put the final nail in the coffin for them. they've got the production value from an aesthetic POV, but the scripts have not been good, and visuals can only carry them so far before people get tired of it. they've got to work harder to bring their audience back, since people seem to have lost confidence in them.

I wonder this too. especially when dramas deal with themes that make some people uncomfortable, they complain about being uncomfortable but then continue to watch it?? why are you doing this to yourself 😭

I think some of the set designs in this drama are seriously gorgeous. but, I'm also in the minority that isn't a huge fan of the more recent aesthetics iQiyi is using for their high budget xianxias, like those three you mentioned 😅 LIP isn't too bad though.
