i think this drama is one that'll get a huge reappraisal down the road as the audience grows up and rewatches it. lots of ppl take the main two male options as red flag green flag and in doing so ignore whats actually in the script and their behaviors, they also misunderstand why nabi keeps placing herself in this situation lol. to me the most interesting part was the parallels of the nabijaeeon and kyuhyunbitna relationship, along with the audience reaction to it. in my eyes that relationship would be Much worse than the leads one if we were applying 'real life' morals and talking abt 'if it happened to a friend we have'. i also think this is one of the best actual College shows to come out of kdrama and the way the audience reacted is probably why romance has gotten increasingly tame and uncomplicated in these netflix productions.

absolutely hated the original but kinda bummed abt this never airing, i wanted to see how theyd spin it considering taejoo is one of the most disliked main leads among old kdrama watchers

this really is just skam LOLLL but i really loved this its been a minute since we got a good webdrama, i also loved jiyu a lot. she was such a passive character and its so reflective of a lot of patriarchal standards around women and how it shapes them as they grow, esp in her fear of disappointing her mother by 'showing' her real life. solid watch!

Title Love in the Big City Spoiler
I think my biggest gripe with this movie is how safe it is And i understand why in many ways, better to meet a movie where its at and all but i really wouldve docked this movie a million times more if the series wasnt coming. This movie was safe with a capital S, it wants its audience to leave moved and thinking 'queer people are just like me' and thats not really a bad thing but its kinda overplayed. I think the lack of Kylie in this film was kinda deplorable on all fronts, like i get it this was made to have the most unproblematic gay people ever but at the same time its still very hurtful to see. thinking abt this movies intentions makes it more enjoyable to me, but it also makes me sad that queer people have to be censored this much to be owed our humanity on such a big stage. the decision to have only one love interest, and have him not even die also works here. the movie seems uninterested in framing queer people sadly, and i can respect that in a lot of ways especially in putting a majority of heungsoos issues on societal homophobia, but it takes away from the actual narrative a lot.

this fell off so bad lmao like at one point every single thing, whether it was interactions between the leads or actual plot points, felt like padding for a structure that was barely standing

I think I have to be the odd one out and say despite all this dramas flaws (and it had many, including the ending) I deeply enjoyed it and frequently miss seeing this couple and the FL specifically on my screen!

????You can use the search engine and find a dozen SK rom-com from 2020-2024 with +8 rating. https://kisskh.at/693591-in-house-confrontationhttps://kisskh.at/713771-love-battle
the general trend in kdramas over the last few years has not been romcom at all, and the ones produced have been.. middling to say the very least (such as love to hate you which you tagged having an overtly misogynist setup). in my personal! opinion there have been very few good romance dramas over the last few years, and if they were good the romance always took a backseat to something else or had random heavy plots like murder thrown in to make it more serious to a general audience. hence my comment abt 'actual romance dramas'.
On Serendipity's Embrace Jul 24, 2024
if this drama aired even 5 or 6 yrs ago it would've been lost in the shuffle but considering the lack of actual romance kdramas lately it feels like such a breath of fresh air.. really hope it stays this good!

Ok then they shoulda just went with a different story there are so many stories to go with but choosing to deliberately…
i literally said this earlier in the comments and as the opening sentence in this comment😭 where in my comment did i say it wasnt disingenuous... im saying that this homophobia is multi directional and something the audience must work against by actively supporting queer stories esp considering how many people have watched this that wouldnt have had it been marked 'BL' instead of bromance in the tags. i was expressing my frustration at the state of queer media? im fully aware of and angry at the censorship
On High School Return of a Gangster Jun 13, 2024
Read up further on the people behind this drama and as it turns out they've produced several BLs before. They didn't make this show a BL because a majority of them are financial busts and their 'market is limited', so they can't find any commercial backing.

I still stand behind saying that this is censorship and homophobia, but in my eyes it's also an example of not just production companies and sponsors' homophobia, its fully reflective of the kinds of homophobia ppl are showing in this comments section.

These kinds of things will keep happening because to many people just the label of BL and the idea that they might be gay cheapens the story. The very existence of gay people will somehow ruin any kind of show they're watching, despite it being the same show with ACKNOWLEDGED romance. People are all over these comments saying that this still feels immensely gay, but the fact it feels that way doesn't change the fact there is zero acknowledged and expressed gay representation.

I don't watch an immense amount of BL but I'm always happy to see queer stories getting a shine, especially in places where there are few legal protections for queer people and especially for stories that are more than just romance. This could've been so interesting, but audience homophobia, fear-mongering around LGBT people have taken so much.

Frustrating that the only thing we can do is support more queer stories (and to block the homophobes in these comments instead of engaging with them).

Ik its a faux pas on mdl to criticize 'fun' 'silly romcoms because youre ruining it for everybody or whatever but i dont care and im gonna do it anyways so if you dont wanna engage with Actual criticism just scroll.
It is actively ableist to start a story with a disabled main lead and by the end of the show, through plot machinations, shes not disabled anymore.
Its even more of an affront because in the original story, she is not actually disabled. They have inserted disability to raise the stakes, to make sure the only stakes arent he dies or she dies but also that she might have to 'go back' to being disabled.
Sol has been disabled her entire adult life, the show does not care about that. They dont want to engage with it or how it affects her so she can never be well rounded.
The very concept of 'curing' a disabled chara and making them no longer have that fisability, returning them back to their 'essence' is actively harmful.
It is disappointing and frustrating, and completely robs me of any enjoyment i couldve had in this show. These showrunners used disability as a plot device and week after week ive had to see fans discuss how scared they are for sol to 'end up' anything but abled and back to her 'normal' life. Those are the conversations and fears that this kind of narrative stokes.
It plops you into the story showing you some of the worst ableism, how sol cant even get a job because theres zero accessability in the world around her, and then promptly ignores it.
Anytime ive brought this up to anybody the response has been 'well this isnt that kind of show'. What kind of show do you mean? Is there a reason this show couldnt have engaged with her disabled experience? Is there a reason she couldnt just have been disabled from birth? Is it about the show or is it about how people dont WANT to see that and theyre using the show as an excuse?
And above all else, THIS WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL STORY. THEY MADE HER A DISABLED CHARACTER. Just to IGNORE that part of her.
The fact that everybody has been so accepting of this, that so many criticisms have been shut down and that so much ableist rhetoric has been passed around week after week has completely ruined any and all enjoyment i couldve had from this show.
On High School Return of a Gangster May 15, 2024
i feel like lots of the discourse is missing that this is the literal definition of censorship. say whatever you want about how weird the plot is, or how odd the premise is but by definition this is what censoring gay stories looks like lol.
theres literally a billion body swap stories abt straight ppl, they specifically picked a gay IP and chose to rip out all gayness. its not a hate train its people being rightfully upset about lgbt stories being scrubbed away for the sake of audience and studio comfort.
also they cast a child rapist in this show so if 'morality' was an issue in the romance...

unbelievably annoyed that ive waited this long for this drama and they're dropping it as a cash grab on a random site and u have to pay like 100 bucks to see the entire thing... they've had it in distribution hell for years and now we're being punished for wanting to watch without buying an NFT MLM scheme

i think of this drama so often... I've gone back to it so much over the years. i really think seeing how deeply different it is from most adult-centric kdramas made me demand so much more out of those stories lol. there's so much about it that was deeply ahead of its times, and its frank take on characters and relationships is so singular in the kdramasphere. so many shows could and should take notes.
On Wedding Impossible Mar 26, 2024
yall in these comments being like does he expect to lie his entire life... yes he does. that's literally what being gay entails in massively homophobic countries. farce weddings like this happen all the time because its genuinely unsafe to be queer.
the suicide rates of queer people in Korea are through the roof, the social shunning that occurs and the ostracization and discrimination is literally a killer.
ur lack of empathy for queer people and queer stories is what stops u from being able to empathize with him because you think him coming out solves his problems instead of making his life ten times harder than it already is, the only thing it'll solve is ahjeong and jihans relationship.
the entire cast is deeply flawed and that's fine and interesting from a romcom, but to completely diminish dohan as selfish when he's going through the hardest time out of all of them, and as he's been stalked and threatened by outing constantly.
the only reason he even asks ahjeong is because its a parallel to their highschool days, he is not blackmailing her he backed off the minute she said no. the only reason she agreed is because jihans harassment led her to resent her situation...
its literally selective memory in these comments, idgaf if you dont like dohan but to act as if being gay is a 'reason people like him' instead of context to his behavior and character is facetious and insane, he can ONLY act like this because hes gay and because his struggles are unique in that way. hes not an annoying ml making mess for no reason.
anyways. dropping this show the writing and narrative have become irredeemably lost, ahjeong has essentially become a puppet for the romance like there's nothing to be gained here which is very unfortunate for such a strong premise

I thought the ending was a little too pat. And I didn't like how a series that featured hookup after hookup decided…
this show seriously failed its characters, like they treated rays rehab so simply. as if recovery is something that you can just do. as if withdrawals arent even a thing.
i dont understand even bringing up these constant subplots if they were never gonna follow through, they valued mess over anything and it brought the show down even though i personally did like ray a lot.

this is almost evasive of the issue, literally every single person on this show gets a shalala happily ever after…
yes he did end up alone, nobody in his family has supported him throughout this entire show. its been a constant point brought up by the narrative that he seeks intimacy constantly because he has none at home, hes not even out at home. he is by definition alone because he has nobody that cares to understand him left by his side..

why did boston need to learn a valuable lesson in the way the rest didnt? did he spread revenge porn around and threaten people with it? or did sand, nick and me do that? is sleeping with somebodys boyfriend worse than that? media doesnt exist in a vacuum, they chose to punish boston like this because he is promiscuous and promiscuous gay men have been historically called unhealthy and nasty for having any habits that 'deviate'. its easier for the audience to accept and frankly quite sad to see it bleed into a narrative written by queer people.

the entire episode consists of beating him down. cheum doesnt even seek him out to apologize, giving him a non apology instead of her brother that she brushes off as not that serious. sand tells nick he loves boston more than himself, not because he knows boston is bad for nick but because he has told nick constantly from the beginning that boston is nasty for nothing else but cheating, when ray literally cheats on mew with sand. these characters are all hypocrites but they get to live happily because theyre monogamous.
