Thank you both for this interesting article! You succeeded again in tempting me to add more titles in my PTW lists :)
Without even realizing it, I've already watched 5 of Yaguchi Shinobu's movies! My most fave among them is "Survival Family": I've watched it twice - the 2nd time with my family and they all liked it a lot! I also enjoyed "Wood Job", "Waterboys" & "Swing Girls", but I found "Dance with Me" the weakest. "My Secret Cache", "Happy Flight" and "ROBO-G" are probably the next ones I'll try :)
A surreal, quirky and unorthodox parody-approach of the struggles, conflicts and obsessions of an artist consumed by his passion. The cinematography and the visuals are stunning, with Kitano's signature long static takes and clear linear camera movements, balancing between satire and sadness. Definitely not for everyone, but highly recommended for art lovers and Kitano's fans.
Unique plot, refreshing approach of various family and relationship issues, brilliant balance of comic and heartwarming moments, excellent performances. A great feel-good family drama, highly recommended :)
One of the most pleasant surprises from an action drama this year! Intense, thrilling and totally engaging. Can't wait for more of this fascinating dystopian story!
there is one thing I wasnt sure of about the ending.. is it another relapse ? or real? I was so confused after…
I think it's an open ending... 1st he told her real-version that their relationship isn't going to work, 2nd he cut off her delusion-version in an empty room and 3rd they met and reunited in a dreamy scene...
A heartwarming story about relationships, family, best friends and love couples, through a one-time glimpse of their departed loved ones and their chance to reconcile. Solid performances by all cast members, especially from both main leads, one of whom we miss dearly.
A nuanced, multilayered and deeply emotional romantic tale of unfulfilled desires, self-acceptance and yearning, between two damaged, flawed and vulnerable souls who believe they don’t deserve love, but desperately try to overcome their psychological barriers and find solace in each other. Captivating performances, beautiful music score and elegant cinematography that balances perfectly the depiction of Hong Kong beauty with bright colorful palette and the colorless, dark personal world of the leads. Totally recommended!
Beautifully written, dear friend! And I absolutely second this: " I love finding character driven stories, great female characters -and best of all- female driven plots❤"
A heartwarming story of a special bonding/friendship between a tough old lady and a clumsy, kind-hearted middle-aged divorced man, both estranged from their children, who find comfort and strength in each other's company.
An insightful and mature approach of infidelity and its consequences between a couple and their families relationships, as well as their friends and working environment. At the same time, this exciting, mysterious, elegant, bittersweet, female-centered drama successfully managed to tackle many aspects of a working woman's life, such as: motherhood, spouse conflicts and trust issues, career expectations and ambitions, sexual harassment, sismance.
Quirky, morally gray and unique story, with some disturbing, some frustrating, some touching moments, a lot of dark humor and exceptional acting, especially from Yoo Ah In and the kid actresses. Yoo Ah In, even though he doesn't have a single line, he's spot-on (as usual) in this challenging role: though he's unable to express himself vocally he does so through his body language and facial micro-expressions in a fascinating way!
