That's why I think this drama is genius! It's a combination of Inception and Matrix, in a way that the concept of stage as the first stage, shadow as the second stage, and beyond Secret manga as the third stage. If the drama ending follows the manga ending, then it's like Inception's stages. It's similar to Matrix for stage and shadow, with tiny difference. In Matrix, once you take the red pill, you cannot go back, whereas in EY, you can be on stage/off stage depending on the writer AKA the Architect - same concept of 'creator' in Inception and Matrix.

In real life, human is made from personalities, memories, dreams, and hope. But here in manga world, your memories of the past is not even real memories. The characters may have their own real personalities off stage, however, memories are still the same. They cannot change that. Danoh's past/memory is a happy one with loving parents though she's sick but she receives plenty of love. Baek Kyung is different.
Baek Kyung being what he is now, I think it's the result of years of unhappiness. His past (or memory) of mom died, dad's a jerk who marries a shallow selfish stepmother, and Danoh persistently loving him, creates Baek Kyung's personality today. Regardless whether he actually likes Danoh or not, the fact is it was his dad who instructed him to be with Danoh! Even if Baek Kyung secretly likes Danoh back, because of his hatred towards the dad, he won't admit it because that means he's losing. The way I see it, Baek Kyung is now testing. Testing his real feelings toward Danoh - is it real or is it fake? Testing his power of self-awareness against his dad.
Danoh clearly knows what she wants: Haru and to live. But does Baek Kyung know what he wants? Out of the characters in the drama, Baek Kyung is the one with the most complex personalities. Danoh and Haru has their own secret - which is great to theorized, but Baek Kyung has layers of 'secrets' of his own.
Somehow I got that Inception vibe when watching this. Instead of a dream within a dream, it's a 'world' within 'a world'. The first circle is the manga world / stage world, second is the shadow world, third is the world beyond manga (stage + shadow), where Dried Squid Fairy is - experiencing worlds between different mangas. One by one has leapt to the next level. If the theory of the ending is correct, then later Dan Oh and Haru will jump to third level.
DONE! But what's with the ending?!?! I get the part where SH has to kill the bad guy, but for all cops in close proximity to shoot him at once??? Eeerr... where's the justification for that? Anyway, pretty entertaining but it's not a rewatch-worthy. Sigh.
It's a movie. I expect something light and maybe a bit silly since she' super naive, but what happens next surprise me and continues to surprise me - in a good way.
