My daughter got married at 17. Then I can understand the age gap. But honestly everything so censored in Chinese Dramas it really does not matter in my opinion. It is so standard in C and K dramas to hire these young ML at like 20 and make them play 30 because they look older. Then they put them with much older actresses. But because they are men it is okay? He was protecting MJ even then. He went and bought fruit instead knowing he would be punished when his dad found out he sold his gift. His father turned into even more of a monster when he drank and he remembers that smell of alcohol and cigs on his father. His father may have even burned him with cigs. He does not want to be like him. He associates drinking and cigs with abuse. That is why he got so upset when he saw MJ was going to smoke. I think he got further traumatized because if the night of the fire they trapped him and he watched them pour gasoline and then flicked a cigarette to start blazing fire that could trigger him too!
