Some historical context: in Joseon, women could not divorce their husbands. Husbands could divorce their wives but only for legitimate reasons (e.g. adultery). The government and king were the ones to decide whether nobility were allowed to divorce the wives who had returned from Qing. But captain Gu is not nobility so he might be allowed a divorce. Anyways, this article explains the tragic fate of the women taken to Qing. "Many women were lucky enough to be repatriated to their hometowns after a ransom was paid. But their joy was short-lived because they were stigmatized as spoiled. Married women from the noble class were not allowed to reunite with their husbands." https://koreajoongangdaily.joins.com/2010/12/29/fountain/The-tragic-fate-of-Joseon-women/2930274.html

The series follows real history pretty closely so it's possible to read into what happened to women who were taken to Qing. The husband is not a bad person bc his ideas are the ideas of the people of that era (and not this era we're living now).

Every woman who had been taken to Qing was considered ruined and either sent back or forced to hide the fact. The husband was exceptionally decent in offering to taken her back. People should pay more attention to the actual historical context. Remember how much the scholars despise the king for succumbing to barbarians, they really considered this ruining and debasing their culture. Major trauma.

Janghyun is not a prince. In his childhood flashbacks he wears a noble boy's clothes not a prince's clothes. He's…
He bought into the nobility rank with money. As a child he was a servant just like Ryang Eum.

Just pondering about neo-Confucian patriarchy and how our two leads each subvert it in their own ways. Gilchae…
Just to add additional context. Captain Gu is above average decent in offering to take her back. The women who had been taken to Qing were sent back or forced to live as outcasts bc they were considered ruined. They had to conceal the fact that they were returnees in order to be able to continue living in Joseon. There's an episode of this in Pung the Joseon Psychiatrist. Also, the KBS drama special "Return Home" deals with the cruelty of the treatment of people taken as hostages by the Ming dynasty and returning to their homeland.

Captain Gu is just doing what everyone did to women taken to Qing. So he is just normal and above average decent in offering to take her back. The women who had been taken to Qing were sent back or forced to live as outcasts bc they were considered ruined. They had to conceal the fact that they were returnees in order to be able to continue living in Joseon. There's an episode of this Poong the Joseon Psychiatrist. Normal adult communication: the situation in Qing has gotten too dangerous for you to stay here.
Jang Hyun: I don't love you anymore so f*** off.
They still can't communicate normally and without creating fundamental misunderstandings. FL and ML are just impossibly frustrating. Why the hell must they be breaking each other at every turn. Separately, they're decent people.

do you know which scenes have been cut out? did they talk about them in an interview? I'd love to know more about…
People posted some of those scenes here. Especially the one that was meant to be in the first episode as an introduction to Junmo would have made me see Junmo in a different light. Apparently Euijong's and Junmo's teenage years scenes and dating scenes were deleted as well.
