Sanjae spent most of his life in the pool - he had no time for girls (and apparently the girls in their school didn't notice him either because of his intense schedule).
It's not Sol's beauty alone that caught his attention IMO- It's everything combined- but mostly her smile. Imagine somebody running towards you with so much excitement AND kindly hands over their umbrella and a few treats for no reason than you "doing your job"- it would capture anyone's attention- specially an inexperienced teen like Sanjae🙈

Since it's the director himself who brought it up and the general atmosphere between the cast and crew (and KHY with the director) seem pretty positive for the most part, it's possible there's more to the story that we are missing - specially since it wasn't only Sol's character that was changed (even Sanjae and her mum's looks seem to have changed a lot when you look at some scenes).

He was talking about the original Sol that was imaged by the previous director. It wasn't that the character was ugly but the original look really didn't help sell why exactly did Sanjae fall irrevocably in love with her.
You can see snippets of her original look in the 2007 flashback of when Sol first saw KTS/ Taesung's birthday song video. What he says makes sense when you see the deleted scenes they had to reshoot (like their iconic passport photo pic).
The reshoot versions of Sol and even Sunjae are way better so it kind of makes sense what he meant (though he could have said it better)
It's been awhile since i last read it but it was good for the most part. It's abit cheesy at times but I didn't mind it (kind of like how some might call Soljae cheesy but we don't care)- nothing super cringey though.
If i have to give a vibe, it's a bit like Shooting stars since it deals with a top star actor and a struggling actress. The main villain is her ex but that story isn't dragged so it's good.
