It wasn't a filler episode to me, it was a transitional episode because everything in it was significant to furthering character relationships. Xingzhi finally walked himself through his feelings for Shenli. He allowed himself to admit his true feelings for her. He was reactionary and badass instead of introspective in showing his devastation.
Also, the flashbacks set them up to now having an ally in the Divine Clan, where they will only receive all resistance/negativity when they reconnect. In addition to that, we got to see Her Holiness' deep love for her "daughter" and how persistent, strong, and dedicated Shenli was even as a young girl. We as viewers know Shenli's story, but she doesn't. Watching her "mom's" pride at not only teaching her, but watching her excel, is only going to impact that emotional scene when she does find out who she is on both sides.
Y'all trip every time there is no action or big fight scene. This is an emotional and probably a location transition episode from the fights, struggles, and distrust mainly between the Divine and Immortal clan to the bigger fight against a common foe. More importantly, it is Shenli and Xingzhi's journey to each other in another realm, like the mortal realm...yes, more battles, more heartbreak, and devastating revelations, but transitions are also good without epic battles too. It's called character development my people.
I haven't read any book or have any link to any special info, this is just my guess. I welcome any pointers, corrections, or differing opinions as long as they are respectful. I'm just a plain person and I would rather have the truth than be right. Again, this is just my opinion and I have been wrong many times in my life, but I see it as transitional and not filler. Then again, my cup is annoyingly always half full...so my eternal sunshine could be clouding my judgement. lol
And finally, for those who question the great god Xing Zhi...my dude froze the ocean for his woman and then when nature gave him backlash, he caught the lightening and froze that too! Be foolish if you dare!
I actually felt the opposite. How would you expect him to act - he is ashamed and torn so being speechless was…
I totally agree with you on Mofang's reaction. There were multiple things happening all at once -1. Shenli found out about his betrayal, 2. His betrayal by Fusheng, who he thought he had under control, 3. His shame for said betrayal against Shenli and lack of control over Fusheng. 4. His fear for the woman he loved.
Mofang has been Shenli's closest confidante for the last 300 years, he is a master spy, and "Young Master." You don't get those things done successfully by breaking down in times of crisis. Discipline under fire. But in his straight countenance, his eyes said so much. They said, "I have to stay strong to maintain control of this situation," and they pleaded with ShenLi to listen to him. The little side glances, the way his lips quaked...all showed in very subtle ways how a battle hardened spy master would react. Fusheng has been waiting for her to die since Mofang stood by her side and not to mention he has control over all those puppets, so Mofang had to play it close to the vest with a psycho like that at his back. So I completely agree with your take on Mofang. Where we differ is your take on Shenli.
Shenli was there to send that demon to the nevermore because he had hurt her people and that was unacceptable. She is the type of person who when she has one job to do, she does it. Seeing Mofang and understanding what he did was devastating, but again, she had a job to do and who she was would not let anything to stop her from doing it.
The actress did such an amazing job of showing her strength and determination, but also in lamenting her betrayer. No, she didn't collapse under the hurt, she is a PHOENIX and God of War, that would never happen...but she also loved Mofang. In all those years, everyone always leaned on her for help, but he was the only one who she had to lean on. In the acting, I felt that the character was devastated, but determined. This is the nature of Shenli. Her tears are precious and the fact that she didn't run him through immediately, but smacked him around, but couldn't go any further showed how much grace and love she had for him. Yes, he betrayed her, but in that scene on the rock they both showed their love for each other and it was powerful. I think they both did a great job.
Take Away from ep 23: Shenli is G.O.A.T.!!! Mofang will always have his ❤️ in his eyes for her, no matter what. Poor General was trying to be all stoic with his, "I just report the news, I don't make it," and got dropped Real QuicK! XingZhi was like my saying this is purely perfunctory and Heavenly Emperor was like, "It's YOUR world, my dude, do whatever!"
This was truly a beautiful, yet heartbreaking episode from beginning to end. Shenli is reactionary, but just and strong. She will not back down and she will always hold the line so no one else has to do so....she neither wanes nor wavers because fighting till the end is her only option. Then we have XingZhi who fights a losing battle between knowing he can't love her because of his responsibility to all life, and being unable to stop doing so no matter how hard he tries. His desperation at the end of the episode broke my heart and made me fear for the entirety of the universe in the upcoming episode.
This drama is not reinventing the wheel, but it is done so nicely that it doesn't matter. I mean I could see all the plot points coming together quite nicely episodes ago, but for some reason my heart wanted to reject my beautiful Mofang's betrayal...cause the actor is smokin' hot...and portrayed him so wonderfully as the tragic character that he is. He truly does love her, but he is a bad guy.
Everyone is doing such a great job with their character! The fight scenes are majestic and interaction between the leads is fun, sexy, and you can feel their respective characters love in every movement, in their funny banter, and in their eyes.
Man, I could go on and on about how they literally are doing a paint by numbers with their bread crumbs of info...that wily 70% lol...but this is really FUN to watch and I am loving every minute of it... and reading you guys perspectives on this show is awesome too!
It's been months, and once again, I have found my happy place! 🥳 This is my fantasy/wuxia "Go Back Couple!" 🥹😂☺️🙃😍 Such a good start...can't wait to see where it goes!
Am I the only one who thinks Xi Xi should of been angrier at Yi Cheng for willingly sacrificing her Career for…
I agree with you. I had this drama at a higher rating until the last 2 episodes. He had just finished saying that he knew to not suspect her of doing something underhanded that would harm him, because she would never do something like that. Then he followed all that trust in HER by doing an underhanded, cheap thing he knew would harm her career. She shouldered the blame for other's mistakes the entire drama, and he was supportive, kind, and loving the whole time, even when pushed away; but I guess that was so he could do the most hurtful thing he could to her and with his "bonus points" he'd built up, she would have to forgive him. I fast forwarded through every scene/episode after she confronted him and got out of the car. I am tired of the trope that a woman being the "bigger person," no matter how horrible her spouse/partner is in these dramas, is noble. It is propaganda at its worst! Without mutual respect there can be no trust, and without trust, there can be no love! I really enjoyed this drama with the exception of FL's maternal family (grandpa, aunt, and cousin) and Tong Xin until the last 2 episodes, too bad they turned the ML into a jerk.
A few random observations...This cast is wildly attractive. It's light and fluffy, but that's only after 1 episode. Acting is solid, so I am very happy. High production values that align with the story. In short, I am loving and living...
Also, I won't compare it very harshly against the original which had over double the episodes and made me fall madly in love with Song Weilong and the incomparable Victoria Song. Shane/Chen is more confident than Yuan Song and Yin is more decisive that Fanxing, while still being true to each character with a slightly different spin...a la acting and directing. Perspectives change, so I will just follow this story where it leads understanding it is the same basics of the story, written, directed, and portrayed slightly differently.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I had a stroke and no longer recognized what decent behavior was. I…
Ahhhh...I never drop a drama, so I will just stick a pin in this at episode 10 and come back with a fresh mind at another time. The FL is plucky, though she started out as a bit of a pill, and the side characters are interesting. When the ML is not being a jerk to her, his sleuthing for the truth is also interesting. It is not a bad drama by any means, it's just difficult to sit through multiple episodes of his unnecessary cruelty and purposeful sabotage of her for reasons that seem out of her control. Thanks for the heads-up, I will come back to this later.
I'm on ep 7 and I find MLs behaviour disturbing af.... Might have destroyed my view of him, even if he changes…
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I thought I had a stroke and no longer recognized what decent behavior was. I am on episode 10 and he is absolutely still a jerk...and I am 14 minutes in. I don't even understand why he is angry because as you said, she told him the truth about who she was long ago. Also, from the description of others, his JXY was a horrible person. The ML is really a stinker. Suffice it to say I will no longer take recommendations from the friend who told me this was "super great" when asked if she knew of any good modern dramas.
Ning Yuan Zhou and Ren Ru Yi are the Wuxia couple of my dreams...along with their motley crew of fellow heroes. This was a truly beautiful drama. I have deliberately avoided engaging in any discussions about this drama after my initial praise during the first few episodes because honestly, I saw its greatness from the beginning and didn't want the experience to have any negativity associated with that enjoyment. I am so glad I did. Though I read the comments, I only listened to the story...and what a story it was! The character development of each and everyone was gradual, constant and consistent. The grandiose fight scenes, political intrigue, camaraderie, and love story were blended perfectly and contrary to a lot of complaints, the pacing was excellent. Action doesn't just happen and learning the backstory is what defines said actions.
I was so intrigued yet also anxious reading on this board. I felt a lot of times characters' histories weren't considered as to their actions. There were many times I wanted to scream that LTG was indeed a whole lot of crazy wrapped up in a whole lot of hotness, but Ruyi was the only "mother figure" dude had and he imprinted on her like a demented baby duck. I was also livid that people criticized Ying initially in the journey stating she was too weak/whiny to be a "prince" and they hated her character. I wanted to scream they were insane. She grew up alone and abused in the cold palace where even the maids could harm her and no one would do anything, but she still volunteered to put herself in danger in pursuit of attaining her love and her brother (yeah that was stupid...but brave). It irked my soul that it wasn't until her horrible "love" did what he did that others fully understood. This is also where NYZ and Ruyi shined so brightly as partners, foils, teachers, and yes, parents, to each member of the crew and carrying this show into greatness. Equal shout out to Shisan and his impressive show of understanding, relationships (all except his own), comedic interludes and overall beauty...Yu Shi San is literally my spirit animal! Yuan Lu...I can't even right now...But it was such a great seesawing of understanding on this board with different viewpoints and even when frustrating, also completely wonderful reading how others were feeling about viewing this amazing drama. As per usual, even some of the messages I didn't agree with usually were very insightful and had me rethinking a lot of my character assessments.
There are no words to describe how much I loved this drama that is filled with such rich characters, amazing fetes of daring, intelligence, heartwarming comedy, and bittersweet sadness. That is something only this cast could deliver, only this drama has recently delivered. This was a definite 10/10.
Episode 14 made my heart smile! Friends, bah, these people are family because no one would set the mood like that for a friend...I was rolling. lol This drama just gets better and better. On a side note, what Shisan said at the end of the episode about his relationships...definitely foreshadowing. Can't wait to continue this brilliant story!
Why are the scholarship kids always so freaking hot!!!! I am not expecting high art here so I am going to enjoy it for what it is, let the story develop, and let it entertain while it can. My eyes are definitely happy...though my mind is a little less innocent. lol
I posted that this drama should get more ratings than wonderland and my head almost got chewed out, i learnt using…
This is your opening msg about the WOL (copied and pasted for accuracy): "How can this get more ratings than story of kunning place ? I don’t ship both leads together , looking so mediocre together. P.s i have a right to my comment"
To continue with your penchant for saying things unnecessarily rude, this is how you just started off your msg to me: "You can write a whole epistle on what not, I stated the reason why and won’t repeat myself, it’s was my comment section "
Now to answer your question as to how would I feel if someone tried to invalidate my statement, like you just did in your reply to me I might add...well, I would do what I am doing now and move on. I don't need to justify myself, use horrible language or even get angry simply because a random person chooses to be rude or disrespectful. I can have a dialogue with anyone when they are respectful but I don't interact with people who answer with rudeness So to answer you completely as to how I would feel/react...when others go low I stay simply where I am because I am already high upon a beautiful pedestal rising like a phoenix.
I posted that this drama should get more ratings than wonderland and my head almost got chewed out, i learnt using…
It not always what you say but usually more how you say it. I am watching both dramas and they have vastly different styles of writing, acting, and content but I am able to enjoy both. The only commonality is they are both historical dramas. Depending on which style you prefer most, say action or intrigue, that is going to influence which drama you like more.
I read your comments and you seem to want to say mean things but when you get that back in return you claim you are being attacked. You offered no critiques of why you thought WOL is lacking that were substantial, used profanity, and provided no insight other than not "shipping" the leads. You then stated you had a right to your opinion as if those who replied angrily to your post did not also have the same right.
Now with that said, I found the whole exchange to be obnoxious, rude, and having very little value as to leading to an open dialogue that could be a good exchange between people of opposing views. I don't like for anyone to get bullied but you cannot throw a rock but then hide your hands and pretend innocence either. Don't troll and ignore trolls is a good motto to have. My opinion, my right to say so.
