FL was engaged to SML but she broke off the engagement. There is no major love triangle although SML does like FL but he doesn't go out to bother her or hog up her time.

Yes, the "nine familial relationships" punishment is a severe method. That's why Shen's family had to hide the betrothal gifts because they would also be considered part of the "nine familial/kinship" and be punished too had they done through with the engagement/marriage.

Awww.. she made things happened in the background for them before they got married (like the empty restaurant and romantic music at the aquarium mentioned in ep. 8). He also did nice things for her inconspicuously. They are strangely sweet.
I can't help but laugh in ep 1, 4 minutes in when Mr. Qian's underling threatened YiBo with an ax. It totally reminded me of Stephen Chow's comedic Kung Fu Hustle even though I know War of Faith is anything but comedy. =)
