FinlandHello you who stumbled across this profile! ^^ I'm a drama enthusiast with a passion for languages and storytelling. I love fluffy romances, ensemble casts, characters with depth, complicated relationships, and stories with distinct messages/themes and lots of emotion. I'm not too picky about what I watch, but I put a lot of thought into how I rate each drama and try to keep my ratings as consistent as possible. I am very particular about my 10/10s and usually only rate a drama as such if it really touches me on a personal level and/or if it's clearly very thoughtfully crafted.
I don't really write public reviews but below's a list of my all-time favourites (aka my 10/10s) in case you're looking for recommendations! Most of these are very well-known but I've written down some of my thoughts anyway because (if it wasn't obvious already) I like to yap :)
My 10/10s:
- Age of Youth (2016)
- My number one drama of all time! I just love, love, love the characters and their relationships with one another (and others as well), and Song Jiwon is still maybe my favorite drama character of all time. Additionally, I think this drama does a really good job at addressing a range of topics and issues without feeling overcrowded or overly simplistic. I wouldn't say it's groundbreaking, but the fact that topics like workplace harassment and intimate partner violence are brought up at all is a lot more than many other similarly light-hearted dramas do. That coupled with a range of distinct, interesting, and relatable characters just made me adore this drama. A top-tier slice-of-life university drama for sure.
- Save Me (2017)
- At first I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this because this was the first thriller I ever watched. This drama is super engaging and interesting, the story is well-written and the characters feel authentic. The themes and topics made me uncomfortable at times, but I found myself unable to stop watching once I'd fallen for the main characters. I needed to see how their stories would end, and I was not disappointed; the ending was very satisfying! Give it a go if you're in the mood for something more serious/dark that'll keep you on the edge of your seat.
- SKY Castle (2018)
- This was another surprisingly amazing watch. Everything from the filmmaking to the writing is immaculate, and as a whole this is one of the most well-executed dramas I've watched. Lots of strong, important messages that were conveyed really well. I also learned a lot about the South Korean education system as well as the culture around it from the public discussion that this drama fuelled at the time of its airing. This drama also touches on topics surrounding familial relations and wealth inequality, and they are interwoven into the story in a way that still keeps the drama entertaining. Definitely heavily focused on the societal critique, but I'd say that the production value and acting made this enjoyable in other ways too!
- Cafe Funiculi Funicula (2018)
- This movie felt like a warm hug. I appreciated how realistic yet hopeful it was in tackling heavy topics like loss and regret. I find that oftentimes dramas and movies go to one extreme (harsh realism or exaggerated optimism), but this movie seems to fall comfortably in the middle. I don't usually cry watching dramas or movies, but watching this I found myself very moved throughout the runtime. I also enjoyed the somewhat subtle romance (not the focus and doesn't define the FL, but it's there), it was done quite well. All in all, I'd say this is a great watch when you want something warm and comforting that won't leave you feeling totally empty after watching.
- Better Days (2019)
- If you're looking for a gripping story, this movie is a great option. This is not something I would rewatch randomly, though, since this is also quite a cruel watch due to the topics it addresses. Even still, there's a lot of beauty in it, and I still think about this story occasionally. The acting is also absolutely phenomenal and as a result I got very attached to the characters. Lots of emotions that were conveyed exceptionally well!
- A Piece of Your Mind (2020)
- This is actually my favorite comfort drama and I think I rewatch this pretty much once a year. What I love most is that while this show starts off quite angsty, you get to see the characters slowly heal throughout the drama. And though this is a romance, the healing isn't just about that, it's about letting time pass and finding strength to move on. Also, there's no boring filler (a problem with many K-romances in my opinion), and the story feels meaningful beyond just the romance. That being said, the romance itself is also top-tier: the characters form a genuine connection beyond just physical attraction, and the chemistry between the mains is fantastic. The OST is soooo good as well!
- Flower of Evil (2020)
- The cast, the story, the production, everything was perfect! The story is compelling and engaging, and it's told incredibly well through the characters, who are well-rounded and play off each other very nicely. There's no drawn-out filler or irrelevant subplots, the story feels interesting throughout. The pacing is also immaculate, I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole series. Overall, I have nothing bad to say about this drama, and so I highly recommend checking it out. You won't be able to stop watching after the first few episodes!
- Semantic Error (2022)
- This is one of the first BLs I watched, and though I wasn't blown away on first watch, this drama has stuck with me. The characters are fun and developed well, and the casting was also perfect. The mains' relationship progresses in a believable manner, and is overall very nicely written. A great enemies to lovers story! In addition, the story is paced exceptionally well considering the length of the drama. All in all, this drama has a very special place in my heart.
- Seasons of Blossom (2022)
- What I adore most about this drama is the cast, but I really love the story too. It's on the heavier side, but as long as you're aware of that, this is a great watch. I love that they explore healing from different viewpoints while still keeping the story cohesive. I also appreciate the shortness, because even though I would've loved to see more of the characters and their relationships, I don't think it would feel as meaningful if it was longer. Additionally, the characters are all interesting and lovable, I genuinely fell in love with them and wanted to see how everyone's stories would be wrapped up. The romance was also very sweet, there are a lot of memorable scenes here!
- Daily Dose of Sunshine (2023)
- You either love or hate this one, and I happen to absolutely adore it. In my opinion, this drama does an exceptional job at compassionately addressing the ways in which mental illness affects both the person suffering from one as well as the people around them. As someone who's suffered from mental health issues my whole life, I found myself crying from relief seeing how this drama humanises the patients. This can be seen in how the drama portrays 'recovery', or, to be more accurate, learning to live with mental illness: the process is different for everyone, it's not straightforward, quick or grand, and you can (and are encouraged to) keep living even if you cannot 'cure' your condition. There's always hope of happiness, whether in the form of fleeting moments or grand joy, as long as you keep living. I think this drama did an exceptional job at delivering these messages.
- With all that said, I want to be clear that this is not a good drama to pick up on a whim. It is draining, and can be hard to watch especially if you're not in a good place mentally. You need to be prepared for heavy topics and possibly distressing scenes, and you shouldn't watch if you're in a vulnerable headspace. Before watching, make sure you're in a headspace where you are positive you can focus on and internalise the encouraging message(s) without getting too swept up in all the depictions of different illnesses. Also, be prepared to take breaks while watching!
- Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna Season 2 (2024)
- Representation matters! This had me kicking my feet and giggling from how sweet it is, but I also teared up upon realizing that watching this was the first time that I'd ever truly related to a character in a show/movie! I loved the genuine, story-relevant societal commentary, the found family and diverse characters, and maybe most importantly the fact that the mains' relationship is developed with such care. I really wish in the future we can get more (wholesome) LGBTQ+ shows like this, where the mains' relationship is not mainly about sexual/physical attraction, and where we are shown more varied forms of queerness and queer relationships!
- Love in the Big City (2024)
- A beautifully written story that gave me hope for a more diverse industry. The realism was at times a little anxiety-inducing for me and this isn't really a show I'd revisit randomly, but the unapologetic queerness along with the confidence of the cast in defending it made it a very special watch. I was very impressed with the production quality and directing, I could really see that everyone involved cared a lot about this story. Seeing how much care went into the production and promotion also made me hopeful that we'll start to see BLs/GLs/queer stories receive more funding and attention in South Korea, and that the genre/genres will gain more appreciation among the general public as well.
- GELBOYS (2025)
- This is just... art. Beautifully and thoughtfully produced and directed, visually gorgeous, wonderfully acted, with a great OST and characters you hate and love and then hate again and the whole time you can't help but root for them. The characters are probably my favorite part of this show: they are all distinct and realistic, and though they make questionable choices throughout the story, everything still makes sense considering their personalities. I also loved that you get to see them grow as people through their relationships with one another. The show starts kinda slow and I wasn't actually hooked immediately, but I was an emotional wreck once I got to the last few episodes. And even now, I still look back and get emotional thinking about this show and how beautiful it is!
