Well actually it's a little complicated, he sacrifice himself because his sect were killed by devils, he use his powers to make them back alive and that his lover ( who protected the demon who did it under manipulation/possessed by the devil) can live safely aka not burdened by this problem. After that he exhausted his power to repair the crack in the nether world using his chaos power that's why he died. Later he still come back as a ghost and make an illusion/momentary body to search for his lover's soul and to kill devils/solve the sect murder case and repair the nether again using his sword , but after it finished he's disappear into ashes, but his soul still in the three realm as ghost though. Eh where did it say the relationship not great? Its just that Bai Jue came back at the time Yuan Qi already young adult + having his own problem / tribulation. So in the novel there's no lovey dovey between a child YuanQi and his father. But there's a scene where YuanQi said that he understands why his father did what he did, and Yuan Qi will take the same path for his love, and Bai Jue accept his choice then go back to God Realm.
