First part was strongest, but at the half way point, the twists and turns pile up so much, it becomes more silly than thrilling. Maybe it's because they'd used up every plot twist known to fiction at that point, but the finale got predictable. Solid performance by Kang Ha Neul, but had they only spent more time on character development, I'd have felt the impact of that brutal ending more. And that "don't scream" part made no sense whatsoever.
I love how eating naked is such a relaxing, important comfort zone for this guy, that he even dreams about it in his sleep. And what is it with Japanese shows making any kind of food look so intensely good. I'm no way near being a foodie and hate to cook, but these dishes look so vibrant, they should be on the cast list. Japan just nails the slice-of-life/food genre.
I so totally agree with you. Love your "chess piece" analogy. He is an object they can use to demonstrate their…
It just really hit me this last episode, how quite dark this one leans. Which isn't the problem, because I like the emotional heavy and angsty shows just as much as the light & fluffy ones. Maybe the episodes are too short for this kind of plot, but I can't figure out, what the show really wants to do here.
At first I was pleasantly suprised by the focus on mental health and thought JH would be introduced as the "healing capacity", but he's becoming someone, who's inserting himself and taking charge of situations, he really has no full understanding of. I don't know. SJ and roomie seem like they have a better balance and have found an arrangement, where JH can at least move more at his own pace.
I'm very curious to see, how they'll wrap this one up.
I'm not feeling this couple. Their timing and balance is just off. Seung Jun needs to either be alone and regain his footing or with the friend/roommate (Shin Myung Sung is so underused here), though he really doesn't appear to be ready for any serious (romantic) relationship at this point. He looks like a chess piece being moved around according to other people's wants and needs. Too many people are literally saying out loud, they won't let him go. Let this guy go (and breathe). Please.
This is one series, I'm honestly wishing would end with most of these people going their separate ways. Cue: flashbacks to Happy Ending Romance.
Reminded me a bit of 'Long Time No See' in that aspect. :)
Long Time No See, yes! One of my favourite love scenes and probably one of if not the most realistic one, I've seen yet. This particular love scene in Love Mate reminded me more of the one in Blueming. But I was surprised to see such a well executed love scene at all and so early on. Honestly, I was expecting one typical awkward "lips resting briefly on other lips" in the last episode, but this was definitely not that. The "surprise" here reminded me of the movie Table Manner, which had an unexpected & unbelieveably natural, sensual kiss. Kinda sad it got buried in one of the more understated Strongberry productions.
Mask Lady just keeps applying add-on's to her already extra look. Just magine how epic she'll look in episode 12. And did Shin Seung Ho's voice always sound so....sultry? I mean, that just hit me out of nowhere. Ji Woong? That flash scene wasn't it, right? He's listed as supporting cast. Lee Do Hyun is just here flexing his hand grippers and acting chops. Going from unbelievably adorable in one scene to brutally hurtful the next and making these shifts look like a stroll in the park.
They need to be really careful not to have all these clown people take up too much screen time with their offbeat weirdness. We have enough comedy now (ok, that ending scene in episode 5 was hilarious!), so let's focus on fleshing out and moving along the main story.
LOL Blues Brothers, now I can't unsee that. Are you old like me or a young person with good tate in movies?
Haha, a little bit of both. You have to know and respect the classics in cinema. And sorry, I put that image in your head, but I can't be alone in this any longer.
I just can't with the whole Blues Brothers look. I keep expecting him (now the two of them) to start dancing and wreck some cars.
The CEO needs to go. Block him, then deck him. Bye!
Our main couple is cute enough, but I'm realizing, I want a BL trope 180, where the loyal (frequently half naked) friend, who picked up the pieces and stayed on the sideline for years with a massive crush, doesn't finish last. If the show is out there, I've either not seen it or forgotten I have.
It was OK. Honestly, it felt a bit underwhelming. Of course, I did watch it right after Gaze in Silence. :) It's nice though to see some regular looking actors once in awhile, when you're used to KBL's and their flawless otherwordly visuals.
I wonder how they'll handle the usual time travel/butterfly effect deal, because these two are not just skating along the sidelines careful not to impact the past, they're literally inserting themselves in it. I'd be perfectly fine with having to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the ride, instead of ending up annoyed when trying to make things add up, only to find out they don't at all. But I'm curious to see, if the show will comment on it - or even "pick a scientific" lane in terms of the butterfly effect existing or not. I can't at the moment remember, how (well) they handled this in Tunnel.
I'm enjoying this one a lot either way so far. The killer plot can't be this "transparent" so soon, so I'm hoping, they'll get it tangled up nicely with their reasons for being there, so it doesn't end up being two plotlines, that don't fully join up in the end, and where one is messing up a good thing for the other (like we just saw happen in Crash Course...).
I'm also already not really needing a romance between ML & FL. I won't complain, that it's there and will happen, but I wouldn't mind, if they'd just be partners in timetravel and let the parents anno '87 carry the romance part of the show.
Baek Hee Seop [1987] is such an adorkable clown boy. I loved him from his very first scene.
I regularly just visit this page to look at the cast list so my brain fully understands that yes, there will definitely be a drama airing soon with all of these people in it.
I was sure, based on the synopsis, I'd be mainly moved by Yukata and his story, because I can relate all too well to dragging around a lifelong issue with eating in front of others due to someone close to you being an insensitive tool in childhood. And a huge shoutout to this show/manga for putting a spotlight on this. Truly.
But until now, it's Minoru, who's getting to me the most. And I think, this is because of how Hiroki Iijima handles the role. He's so, so GOOD. His constant micro expressions and emotional eye acting. There's so much going on inside his heart and head, and it is written all over his face and how he moves. Whether it's insecurity, sadness, confusion or his growing yearning. The way his gaze softens, when he looks at the people, he care about. Combined with his deep voice. Hiroki definitely showed up to show off.
Minoru is so warm, selfless and caring. It's very touching to watch him and I want this guy to be happy ASAP. (Dad needs to learn how to read the room.....)
She might have dark past, wouldn't be surprised if she was responsible for some of those stories.
I think, you're right. It's too odd to be just a comic relief thing (and it's not that funny), so I'll look forward to any kind of explanation. I'll commemorate the masked lady until then by slapping on a sheet mask during my watch of every new episode. 😁
STREAMING UPDATE: Disney+ Singapore now confirms the same Premiere date, 5th May with Episodes 1 to 6. New episodes…
Good news! I've specifically put this one on hold, since I don't want horrible to no subs pulling my opinion/viewing experience down. Better to wait it out then. Thanks for sharing.
I'll get to see it at a Japanese filmfestival in Europe in June :) I guess that means that a DVD release isn't…
Is that the festival in Frankfurt? I'm so tempted to go! I haven't seen any news regarding a general movie theater release in Europe or any kind of screening/promo tour. I've only seen news about the one festival in Italy and this one in Germany.

This just broke me.

And the outro song by Daiki Ueno. Love, love it.
