I was just checking out MDL to see, what previous dramas, my pt. 1 precious being has been in, I can drown my sorrows with. I end up here - seeing that glorious poster?! After I'd abandoned all hope. I don't care, how, why, or if I get 50% human, 50% purple squid. This poster gives me life!
Understated, heartfelt and unassuming slice-of-life. Show is so quiet and modest in tone and vibe, you almost forget to pay attention to the skillful writing, moving messages and solid acting. While I thought some of the themes were delivered a bit heavyhanded and didn't feel fully integrated with the story, I can mostly look past this. I was at one point hoping for another conclusion to the main leads' mutual stories, but the writer knew better, and I ended up really appreciating how the ending was handled.
There were quite a few highlights, but one that especially stuck with me, is the confrontation scene in the forest. I thought the long shot/wide shot was such an surprisingly effective choice for that scene. Usually, the camera would be right up in the faces of the actors, but here the distance worked wonders. It was risky to shoot one of the characters in the scene almost completely from the back. Especially given how emotionally heavy the dialougue was. But I was still moved without even seeing his facial expressions. Nicely done.
When Ho Tae threw those Spanish lines at his man and polished the whole thing off with his boyish "I'm winning"smile, I forgot 90% of, what I'd just spent weeks watching. Such a scene stealer!
The 2nd couple had my heart completely from beginning to end, and while we barely got a storyline, I enjoyed every minute of screen time, show gave this couple.
Now, someone please give Won Tae Min a main role. We deserve it and he can handle it.
Kim Seo Hyung was impressive in Nobody Knows and her vibe in general as an actress is just....different. I hope, this gets picked up by an OTT available for us international viewers. I'm looking at you Viki.com.
The trot trio friendship, Shin being the greenest flag ever, the wholesomeness & warmth, the well-timed comedy, noodle shop lady, Cho Seung Woo in general (and in those dark suits, with that hair, the glasses...the man is a treasure!) and those child actors carried this show. Correction: was this show.
Show failed in merging Han Hye Jins character with the overall story and the main gang. She was and felt like an outsider from start to end. Even her kid outshined her in all their mutual scenes. They should've wrapped up her story in the first episodes, when it felt natural. I'm SO relieved, they didn't force a love line with her & Shin, but left the romance to Jang Hyung Geun & noodle lady.
If they'd completed Hye Jins story sooner, it would've freed up more time for both Jung Shik and Choi Jun/Youtube dude, who I thought were two huge wasted opportunities. Youtube dude joining Shins office gave us some really strong scenes initially, but it quickly fizzled out and the rest of the show, he was basically just hanging around.
While I didn't care much for the main horrible family/Shin plot, I loved having my heart melted by watching Shin with his nephew and I have to give it up for evil stepmom. All other Kdrama characters, I've hated with a passion before, became mere Teletubbies compared to her. Oh man, she nailed it.
But oh, those child actors and especially radio lady's son! The scene where dad forces him to watch the video of mom on his phone, I won't soon forget. The way the kid added fear to his crying!!! Flawless.
Now I'd like to order one Shin & one trot trio guy friendship to go. Leave out the trot bangers. And the red wine.
Loved this one, but that acceptance speech was a bit much. Kaneko Daichi really impressed me with his performance and Ryohei was just too loveable. I cried in every episode, so now I'll have to check out the movie and see, if it'll move me just as much.
Thing is even in the manhwa 2nd couple didn’t have much screen time on main storyline… i think in the extra…
I haven't read the manwha, but I'm all for the show being true to the original story. It was just, that the previous two episodes had more scenes with the 2nd couple, and things were happening between them, I wanted to see dealt with even more. So...a little tweaking to give them more scenes, I wouldn't complain about at all. 12-14 episodes would be great though, but like you say, KBL's are progressing, so we'll probably get there. For now, I'm just very happy starting a new episode and seeing the + 30 min run time.
Honestly. I can't blame Ji Won Young for hesitating too long to fess up. Tae Joon in his tall, dark clothed, broody, hurt state is pretty intimidating. When he stormed through that door and pushed Won Young down on the bed, I didn't know, whether I should swoon or call the cops. Dude was intense!
I laughed, when Won Young was pouring himself drinks to gain courage to tell his man the truth, and then the bottle had that thing, where you can't just pour a freaking drink, but have to literally shake the whisky out. Poor guy.
Disappointing, how little screen time the 2nd couple had these two episodes. They seriously need their own spin-off show. Even with the couple of minutes they gave us, they still managed to outshine the main couple.
I swear, Go Ho Tae and his mischievous self-satisfied smile is killing me. 🥰
Did anyone catch who that last ghost rider was? I guess it was a cameo, but I couldn't recognize her. Was it a reference to something, that happened earlier, or is it a reference to a show, both she and ML has been/will be in?
Guinness and tequila shots! I developed a five day hangover just from watching that scene.
I'll need to watch the entire show and then rewatch it, before I'm able to put some decent sentences together expressing how & why this one is doing everything right. At the moment my mind is a mush of 50% unintelligible muttering, 50% soundless exclamation points, when I'm watching new episodes.
Even from the first short teaser clips I thought this one could compete with & possibly surpass some of my all time favorites. Yes, I'm looking at you To My Star 2. I'm not sure, if my heart is ready to have a new KBL knock that one off its pedestal yet, but how I LOVE, that there's even a contender. 2023 sure is off to a great start.
Among the saddest things in this world are the quietest kids. They have more words to say and express than anyone…
....and the other kid reading the negative comments about his mom, while he kept pressing the dislike button for every single one, but not saying a word. Right in the feels. And that scene, where the nephew asks the driver to stop for snacks, and then he's sitting there eating alone in the convenience store. Even the driver felt that one. The kid needs to be with his uncle.
I know right, he was my favorite from the start. Platoon Leader, come back!!
Same! And they had us sit through 20 minutes of watching him being doomed. If they'd all just focused on their bombs instead of talking, our guy could've lived.
I should've seen this one coming, but I'd convinced myself, the one to go would be Won Bin. At the beginning of ep. 6 I was ready to complain about these split seasons, but now I appreciate the breather.
WHY did it have to be platoon leader?! I'm absolutely devastated and may never recover.
Overall, though - great show! Almost perfect mix of action, gore, drama and comedy. I'm especially pleased by how well the comedy works and is used throughout. I like that the kids for most part act their age and don't magically turn into grown action heroes, because someone handed them a riffle and sparkly speedy starfish with healthy appetites suddenly fell from the sky (they freak me the hell out, so I'm trying to make them cuter.)
Disappointing how the aliens' weakness is the cold. Show could use some flamethrowers.

Highly recommend giving this one a go!

Unmissable.

I spent the entire show trying to remember, where I'd seen her before. But apparently, it's her first role.

These child actors, though. They're tearing me up.
