I ended up feeling sad for pretty much every character. Nearly everyone had lost someone, be it a parent, lover,…
My thoughts are Xiangliu and Xiaoyao are too similar in character to be good for each other.
Xiangliu is like Xiaoyao, but a more depressed version since he had always been alone for far longer than she had been. If Xiaoyao did not meet Jing and fell in love with him, she might have ended up like XL a few hundred years later - enjoying life's moments but never truly embracing life itself.

Two damaged people can emphasize with each other, understand what each other went through, but they are more than likely to drag each other down again. For a healthy relationship, they need someone who is not like them to help them heal and grow. So who Xiangliu needs is a female version of Jing haha now who in the xianxia world meets this character setting?

In the novel, Chichen's adopted fox demon told Xiangliu to his face 'Even if Tushan Jing is dead, I am glad Xiaoyao chose him(instead of Xiangliu)'. That really sucks to hear but yeah, Xiangliu needs some healing for himself first before he can be anybody's special someone.

Just as Xiaoyao had found her interest and purpose in pursuing medical studies - to heal rather than kill - before she was ready to mend her relationship with Jing again, Xiangliu's war was unfortunately not the ideal thing to depend on.

This user @unbeliebubble : You are the one spreading misinformation now, claiming 'censorship' is the reason S2 sucks.
For your information, they did not have 40 eps worth of footage that they cut down to 23 for airing. Censorship had nothing to do with this failure.

Censorship, means scenes that cannot be aired. The scenes that did not show in the drama were not even adapted to be shot into actual footage in the first place. It was their production decision to condense the events in S2 and made a mess of everything.

They probably know this as well. Airing it in two parts was a strategic move.
When S2 started airing, the ad slots for LYF was full since everyone thought it was going to be as good as S1. They had 10+ ad slots all taken up. As the series went on... they finally wrapped with just 4.

The quality of S2 was obviously lacking. As we have speculated, it definitely looks like a money issue since they can't seem to do decent CG work on even Yang zi's scenes.

Thanks for taking the time to share the novel and fan speculations.
I too don't think XL spared any life on Jing either.
The drama had XL showing up randomly out at sea was really speechless for me. They want him to have a hand in 'saving Jing' so badly.

In the novel its never clear how XL 'gave his life' in the first place, since a life is hardly a quantifiable item.
This is not similar to xianxia idea of donating years of cultivation to 'power up' a low level individual. Its not as if Xiaoyao's counter fell to 0 and Xiangliu donated 10000 years and now she has a full life again.

Its not clear what is 本命精血, and how much XL has to give in order for it to be considered a 'life'.

How I saw it was, Xiangliu healed Xiaoyao over the years but her lifespan was her own original lifespan. He re-ignited her 'engine' with his own life force ( xianxia medical science haha ) after healing her body over the years, but her body has now been permanently 'mutated' by his blood. Perhaps the first time to evolve her needed decades, but at the Yao chi he only needed a moment since her body was now similar to his, so the way to re-ignite her life force will take only a moment. The act of reigniting her life does not seem to involve killing one of his own lives.

Anyway the drama changed it so that Xiaoyao was not dead now and didn't need to be revived.
The drama team suddenly changed the condition to using 2 lives to kill the bugs when in the novel XL only used 1 life to lure the bugs into himself and kill them.
He told Bi Jun, one more life doesn't matter on the battle field, that's why I always thought Xiangliu went for the final battle with 8 lives intact.

Noted thanks! So his nine heads do not reflect how many lives he has but the drama made it one head = one life?
"相柳把自己的本命精血喂给小夭" = so that 'life blood' is one of his lives?
That is all that was mentioned in the novel regarding the life he gave right.

小夭说道:“我一直昏迷着,具体我也不清楚,应该和我种给他的蛊有关,靠着他的生气,维系住了我的一线生机,然后他又施行了某种血咒之术,用他的命替我续命。”
Xiaoyao did not understand what exactly Xiangliu did either. This was why when I read the novel I was never under the impression that he 'gave a life' like some kind of video game.

Also in the novel, Xiangliu did not expend any life to save TSJ right? He only used Xiaoyao's own blood condensed with his spirit power into a pill?

If you read the novel you would know Xiangliu's acts are not completely selfless. He is not the wimpy version the drama is selling.

In the novel, Xiangliu didn't give a life to revive Xiaoyao from her coma either. He had all nine heads intact when he saved her in the whirlpool.
Also, it would seem he used only one life to attract the bugs and destroyed them. But for the sake of looking 'selfless' the drama team made him use up three lives in total for others.

Oh another yaoliu. What is your issue?
You don't agree and so I am the one spreading misinformation?
Pls get over yourselves.
Every yaoliu gets to have an opinion except other drama fans?

Honestly the censorship update is not sudden. Some people have pointed out that the 40 ep max limit was in 2020.…
Excuse me I am not spreading misinformation?
I am not the one who has been saying how the drama is aired.

Also, the whole reason why the drama team didn't do that is probably so they can win all their awards in 2023, since its obvious now that if they aired S2 last year, it would have brought down the general reviews definitely. It would have been a good start and a lame end.

I got a question what is time to the diets when they say 37 years went by how long is that so confusing to me
I believe deities still count the years as human years... since in Dahuang they all live in the same place. This is different from other xianxias with different realms that is using a different time code lol Like typically, a day in heaven is a year on earth...

geez! why they change the fact that XL use all that blood that he asked from XY to cure Jing? they really tone…
They actually made XL look better in the drama.
He gave that blood back to Xiaoyao to revive her later.
And now they made him use one life to save Jing from some lame sea monster.

But yeah I agree, novel is waaaay better.

A lot of people are complaning over the second season for being less interesting than the first one. We musn't…
Honestly the censorship update is not sudden. Some people have pointed out that the 40 ep max limit was in 2020. The drama was filmed in 2022. Even taking preproduction time into consideration, S2's script has been really butchered nearly beyond recognition.

The worst decision was to make Xinyue the fall girl for something Cangxuan was supposed to do. That destroyed alot of other iconic scenes for other characters, including the final scene where Xiaoyao met with Xiangliu. That was supposed to be a truly delicious last scene where XL would point Xiaoyao to the direction of her brother, which will lead to that epic fallout arc between yaoxuan.
In the end, we just got nothing, just a ten-thousand year tea dream...🙄

They just show XL finding him. Nothing else.
The reason they cut all of that was because Xiangliu saving Tushan Jing was not a pure selfless act. Maybe drama team didn't want his actions to look tainted but that was the essence of Xiangliu. No good act goes untainted. lol

XL held TSJ for six years and only told Xiaoyao to look for his killer after he failed to kill Cangxuan himself. He suspected that Cangxuan or some big clan leader might be the one behind it because no one else in Dahuang could have pulled it off. By letting her hunt the killer down, Dahuang can fall into chaos once more, giving his troops a lease of life.

In the novel, Xiangliu didn't give any life for Jing either, he took Xiaoyao's blood to revive him with a condensed pill infused with his own spirit power. Indirectly he let Xiaoyao save her own man.

S2 is a real tearjerker for me. It was well written though each character is flawed, they were all given moment…
That is because that really made zero sense.
The drama saved costs and did not cast the two demons that were raised by Chichen and Heng who lived at Mount Jade. Those were the characters who had interaction with Xiangliu when he went to resurrect Xiaoyao.
In the novel, Nian only helped him by putting her sister in the seashell he sent to Haoling to preserve her life until he made it to Mount Jade.
The drama's cost cutting and strange plot changes made logic go out of the window.

just wanted to ask, do i need to watch 'strange tales of tang dynasty' before watching this?
Highly recommended to watch the first season as you will get to see different dynamics of the characters changing over time.
Definitely worth watching!
