Unless you have solid evidence/quotes from actual production people for public record, that Deng Wei was really involved in the rewrites, please also just take that as melons and do not draw unnecessary hate for him by making these claims. Especially when you even attribute the delay in production to him.
As far as we all can see, the drama production itself was slow to start, with funding being the issue. Their set building only started a few months ago. Compare to LYF which took years to develop, they built their sets a year before filming. There can be no huge rewrites that will affect set building of the drama world unless its like a huge dynasty change, so I would rather that 'fault' not be pinned onto Deng Wei.
As his fan, you should be aware that generally actors getting script changes is not considered a good image, and commonly viewed as overstepping. Unless the production team BTS later 'credits' him as having creative input, which added more screen time for the other characters ( then its a 'positive' thing) I don't think we should be going around giving free ammunition to the anti fans as you are aware, are all too ready to spread hate for him.

FL is still supposed to be independent in the novel even when she was supposedly a 'weak woman' who can't defend herself directly as before. She saves herself plenty of times with her wits alone.
Don't misunderstand that fans are expecting a damsel in distress in order for the ml to look strong.
Actually one of the rumored script changes that made fans mad, was that the ending was ML is safely on his throne while the fl rides off to fight in the war. ( This part would really be like Prince Jing ruling as emperor while MCS goes off to fight his war after taking his stimpack ) By the end of the DSL novel I skimmed, but I am pretty sure the ml fights his own battles even after he takes the throne. He does not outsource that job to others.

I didn't read the novel in depth like I did the LYF or LDT novels, but actually I found the novel pretty interesting.
To give a very simplified description, it has many similarities to Nirvana in Fire. Since it was mostly a story about rooting out the evil people who had conspired to execute the fl's entire clan and army, and helping the 'good and worthy prince' ascend to the throne. Except in this story, the fl is Mei Changsu, the ml is Prince Jing, and they sleep together alot during their shared 'mission'. hahaha
The fl pretty much manipulates and 'helps' the ml by throwing hints and tools for him to take down their common enemies at first, using the last things left in her arsenal after her fighting prowess was taken from her, which is now her brains, beauty and sex.
What I found very 'cool' in this story, was the fl did not just sit in the darkness like Mei Chang su, but she went deep into the trenches with the other women she 'saved' and are now 'using' their own bodies to uncover secrets and steal important items. As the 'lowly' women of pleasure. To them, there was no shame in what they are doing. They are also avenging their own family, to the best of their own abilities. But the story also showed these women were living only for revenge, and the complicated sense of 'survival guilt' as well as their emotional baggage was explored.
I did not find the ml as bad as 'garbage' as you described. In fact, I found his constant inner struggle with himself regarding his inexplicable attraction to the fl who to him, was a very suspicious, 'shameless', 'insincere' woman with her set of wiles, a rather funny contrast to the otherwise typical direct attraction story plots. How he had been hung up over a 2 week fling in his past from 3? years ago was the 'deep affinity' love plot with the fl. The idea that ml could not forget that someone without knowing her name or face was rather romantic but I guess drama changed that too now XD
And the ml was very astute and powerful in the novel, not just saving the fl many times, also saving other characters as well, merely by 'flying' around like ninja. I think he is too OP, they probably will nerf his skills in the drama.
What is no doubt going to be a 'deep fundamental' change for the final script, because firstly novel is too light-hearted sometimes and the way some things got done was rather cartoonish, plus no Cdrama will allow the fl to be this 'lowly' character. Which is such a shame because seriously after all the rewrites, just how much of a ship this DSL is going to still be itself except just sharing a name with the novel?
Anyway I am already preparing myself this time, to treat the novel completely different to this drama. As long as its still a good story and strong acting, that should be good enough.

I only skimmed the novel but even though I am also very tired of all the scene counting, but I also can't completely blame the fans who had been 'cheated' too often when drama production teams make one claim and then act suspiciously as well. This is not only for DSL but happens often to other drama productions so I guess they are wary and don't want to start complaining when its 'too late' lol ( even though I feel its already too late anyway )
To be honest, personally i found some *rumored* changes rather ridiculous, because I thought the whole point of adapting from a novel, is to follow at least 50% of what made the novel special and outstanding?
Since her father and brother are still there, maybe the scenes being shot are still set in the past, so she has not lost her fighting abilities yet? Or that is not her brother but her fiancé? Right now we don't even have cast confirmation yet right? Or they are all looking at those daily schedules to 'discover' the cast for themselves.
Regardless of how 'strong' the ml role is eventually going to be, I feel that its essential to the plot and character development that the fl should later be 'downgraded' from a powerful independent fighter-class, into a physically 'weak' but mentally still 'undefeated and strong' strategic-class role. They did this for Wang Churan's character in AYTO and she did not become a lousier fl. If she manage to go into war at the end like the rumors claim, I know I will be super disappointed. Not because somehow Deng wei's role might be diminished but at the lack of courage of the drama team on how to portray a strong woman.
If the drama is going to deviate from the novel by too much, why even bother calling it a novel adaptation at all right? Just call it an original script and novel fans can also stop feeling offended lol
