I LOVE THESE TWO SOOOOO MUCH!! And the fight scenes are/fight choreography is god tier. Make as many of these as your heart pleases Sakamoto Yugo. :) I am a huge fan of his filmography, and he's still young so hopefully he keeps cranking out these bangers.

Minimalist. Simple. No unnecessary fillers and frou frou, just straight "get down to business", procedural police work. Well acted and some of the stories/cases hit my heart like a sledgehammer. Not this is good shite. On to Season 2!!
Episode 5. So far Grandma is the absolute STAR of this show. I LOVE HER!! Also I hate to say this but in terms of acting, War is Coca Cola. Y'know? The original Coke and everyone else is RC Cola, dollar store brands and the likes. His performance stands head and shoulders above his peers. Yin isn't terrible, he's quite good but his acting is definitely elevated when he is opposite War and their chemistry is palpable. I adore them together.

I wonder when Thai shows will drop/improve on this form of stilted dialogue in their BLs. There is always that weird pause between responses, just dead air and it breaks the flow of scenes and takes away from the emotional effect. It's as if you are just watching actors speaking lines instead of feeling them getting into their characters. It's gotten better but... sighhhh.

THIS IS GOING TO BE LONG LOL

Man! I wanted this show to earn a 10 from me, as in I expected it to really live up to its potential. Unfortunately as is the norm for many recent Korean thriller shows, it starts with pulse pounding action then loses it's way in the middle, with a rushed/lukewarm ending.

The first few episodes were gritty, violent and very similar to Korean gangster movies, which I have seen MANY MANY MANY of, so I was excited and invested. The display of neon colors of the crazy night life which blind the masses to the dark deeds that happen behind closed doors; the outward glitz and glamour juxtaposed with the dark filth of humanity, the police action/street chase all made for a promising start. I did feel as if I had somehow been dropped in the middle of an ongoing story despite the attempt of a quick backstory being given.

This was not a show that should have had a stupid cop lead and yet, here we are. Another policeman who cannot think on his feet, lets his emotions get the best of him and acts foolishly. We need some shows with smart cops/protagonists Korea, this is getting tedious. The show would have been elevated had he been smart and fast acting but I guess stupidity helps move the plot along. You CAN make the cop intelligent and still find ways for the bad guys to outdo/elude him.

The story was jumbled and messy, the relationship between the daughter and Jenny was meant to illicit sympathy but it just rang so empty to me. The flashbacks didn't work the way they should have, maybe they were just shown at the wrong times, I don't even know. I didn't feel the connection to a depth where she would go as far as she did even with knowing how they met etc. I blame this on the direction and screenplay. The order of things just bogged down the story.

The moments that truly moved me were the ones where Jenny and Gil Ho opened up and you saw a glimpse into the vulnerability that lay behind their hard, rough-edged outward personas; when they let their walls down, reminding the viewer that underneath the bravado lay two lost and broken souls. They were survivors in a world where the weak get eaten alive. That aspect of the show was very well done. The unspoken feelings, the subtle looks, his desperation to find her, I loved it all.

The grit, grime and violence of the underworld and the shadiness of the powerful were all present in this show but the heart wasn't. A lot of style and little substance. The psychotic villain was so OTT, instead of manic and crazy he came off as a caricature of what a junkie would be. I don't know, I just wasn't feeling him. What the cop dad did to find his daughter was a tad unrealistic. It all became a bit incoherent and disjointed and honestly I just wanted it to end. Some characters' decisions just left me baffled.

Kudos to JCW and Bibi for their acting chops, and appreciated the honest depiction of cruelty and violence. It is an ugly, grimy world and I wish more people would understand that and not envy those you see living the so called high life especially women. The price is not worth the "reward". Underneath the tailor made suits and Italian leather shoes lay savage beasts and everyone is their prey. No, I am not shaming the escorts etc. I am simply stating in general that the need to be in with the "cool kids" can lead to one's downfall. So many people are drawn to this false life like moths to the flame.

Could have been a masterpiece in the gangster/dark city life genre, and while there were superb moments, they were overshadowed by things I couldn't get past that lessened my enjoyment. Watch if you like dramas that show the underbelly of society, people searching for loved ones and don't mind vicious knife fights. Skip if you need tight script, coherent story and smart leads.

Would give it an 8/10 mostly because of the action but adding a .5 for the acting.

it gets better
Yeah I'm sure it does :) I just had to do a quick vent. I have to understand, he's young and inexperienced; he wouldn't exactly know the right thing to do in that situation.

Broken hearts, so many broken hearts everywhere. :(

Great little crime thriller, with twists and turns that weren't contrived. It brought nothing groundbreaking to the genre but I was never bored or felt like I was watching a tired old same same show.

Grey characters abound, a fun whodunit caper bolstered by stellar acting especially by the main couple, whose scenes together were both loving and poignant. I actually teared up at a couple of their interactions, a surprise because I honestly walked into this viewing not expecting to be emotionally devastated. The tension and suspense levels are not very high but this was perfect for the general atmosphere of the way the events were unfolding. I was stressed for the lead especially and rooting for him despite his bad judgement, but I never felt overwrought and I didn't want to.

There were flaws concerning the forensic aspect especially but I was so immersed, wondering which direction the events would lead that I forgave that ball drop. A fun, emotional ride and worth every minute I spent watching it.

Trust me and do it. You might not love it. But you won't regret it for sure. It's one of those 'kdrama must watch'.
Ok, I will take your word for it and put it in my ASAP queue! Thank you for the response :)

Why? Why they can't be vers? 🀦🀦🀦Enough already with this...
Danmei novels are written in a way that usually specifies who is strictly the gong (top) and who is the shou (bottom) so it's not farfetched or insulting to ask this question. Not saying either way is wrong or right, just sharing that tidbit...
Windchime Nov 21, 2024
As an obsessive danmei reader I don't know HOW I am only finding this list now?!? THANK YOU for compiling these. When I win the lottery, first order of business, well, after taking care of family etc. is to build a studio and get to work producing danmei/yaoi everything everything eveything lol
On Flying Phoenix Nov 21, 2024
This novel is a doozy (but honestly most historical danmei is LOADED with TWs) ! They would definitely have to water it down. How to do so when their tumultuous relationship is integral to the story? Hmmm.

Personally I have no issues with heavy, NC, dark themes etc. and it's a shame we never get to see these stories actualized the way they were written or with the same gravitas felt when reading them. My wish is that someone, someday creates a platform for us serious danmei lovers to watch all these angsty, painful, torturous, dog blood tales in all their true glory.

All that wishing aside, we who have to abide by the rules and are "at the mercy of" the CCP πŸ™„ are grateful we even get ANYTHING.
